Protect & serve...and birth CPD officer delivers baby in parking lot

Ken Walker did more than protect and serve. The sergeant with the Corinth Police Department delivered early Monday morning. The six-year veteran with Corinth PD delivered a baby around 4:15 a.m. Monday in the K-Mart parking lot. “I have never been involved in anything like that,” said Walker. “My first response was to tell them to get behind me and I would get them to the hospital.” Karla White and her mother, Lisa Worsham, were headed to Magnolia Regional Health Center when the baby decided it was time to come into the world. “I told my mother the baby was coming,” recalled White of the trip from Tishomingo to Corinth. “I am just glad the officer was near and I appreciate him being there.” Walker was across the road from K-Mart when the call was

Basket fund hits $11,000 The spirit of giving the holiday season is alive and well in the Alcorn County area. Donations are beginning to pour in for the 20th Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund. A $25,000 fundraising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets could be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 5. Baskets were given away based upon faith the goal will be reached. So far $11,085 has been raised, meaning $13,915 still has to be raised to meet the goal. Recent donations include $500 by Oak Grove Independent Methodist Church in memory of W.E. Sharp; $200 by Donny Shadburn in memory of Velma Shadburn; $100 by the Conniff family in memory of Daniel V. Conniff Sr., Mrs. Effie Harbert, Edith H. Norman and W.D. The group welcomed 67 needy children from city and county schools at a special Meet Santa event at St. James Catholic Church “It gives kids who aren’t likely to receive a gift on Christmas morning a chance to see Santa, get their photo taken with him and receive a personal $15 Christmas gift,” said Ray Ball, who portrays jolly old Saint Nick at the event each year. Christmas and New Year’s will bring changes to city and county garbage collection schedules and affect office hours this week and next week. All city and county offices will be closed Thursday and Friday this week and next week for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The collection schedules will differ between the city and the county. For city garbage customers, Monday’s and Tuesday’s routes were collected on Monday. Wednesday’s route is being picked up today. Positioning itself for growth. The Alcorn School District will overhaul its existing network infrastructure next month ahead of the wireless high speed Internet install set for the spring. Director of Technology Rose Seaborn said the overhaul is forward thinking for the district.
