Local minister meets Obama BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com
A local minister’s efforts to build bridges across racial lines has taken him all the way to the White House for the president’s annual Christmas celebration. Rev. Lamar Walker of Rienzi
said it was the opportunity of a lifetime when he got the chance to attend the Christmas Ball at the White House on Dec. 8. Walker, a veteran preacher in Alcorn County who currently serves as an associate minister at Hopewell M.B. Church in Rienzi, was invited to the event
by his longtime friend, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker. The minister said he’s been seeking the chance to meet President Barack Obama as part of an ongoing book he’s working on about bringing the races together and reflecting local and national events over
the past decades. Walker has been heavily involved with government at the state and national level over the past several years and made many connections at all levels. His book will rePlease see WALKER | 3A

38 angels need adoption BY JEBB JOHNSTON
Alcorn County native Uriah Whittemore was an Ole Miss student working as a restaurant cook in 2003 when he realized his life wasn’t going the way he had envisioned. His brother, Wesley, had just enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Uriah decided to follow suit. “It was more of a brotherly bond
than patriotism,” he said. The son of Jacky and Sue Whittemore and Charlotte and Steve Jones soon became an impressive member of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team for Operation Enduring Freedom. As a EOD Tech, Whittemore assisted his team with defusing bombs on the front lines of Iraq, AfPlease see MARINE | 2A
EASTVIEW, Tenn. — An unselfish desire to help others has sparked a dream in the heart of a McNairy County woman who has won the battle with breast cancer. The dream is to build Hope Hall to help with the fight against cancer. Susan Allen is in the process of building Hope Hall at Hope Vineyards in Eastview for a place for cancer victims to come for educational help and support during the traumatic time in their lives. She and her husband Peyton have made progress with the building that will be finished in 2015. “We want to have a place where breast cancer patients and survivors can come to seminars and educational meetings to learn more about the disease,” said Allen. “We want to help other people to be able to gain more knowledge to help them through the terrible process.” Hope is the one word that came up many times during Allen’s treatment and recovery. That is why Susan and Peyton decided to use the name “Hope Vineyards.” The Allen’s planted pink roses at the end of each grapevine row to signify a dedication to

With the deadline past to provide Angel Tree gifts, 38 children who were selected from the tree have not had gifts returned. “I’ve got 38 kids that are not going to have Christmas,” a concerned Michelle Miles, Salvation Army director, said. “We’ve just got to get these children taken care of.” Anyone who is willing to help is asked to contact the Salvation Army on Monday, in person or by phone, to make an adoption. A quick turnaround is needed — she requests the gifts be turned Please see ANGELS | 6A
Knights’ event brightens holiday BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
Hugging the legs of Santa in an attempt to further enjoy his company, over 75 exceptional children gathered at St. James Catholic Church on Tuesday for the 9th annual Knights of Columbus Christmas program. Made possible by the Knights, the staff at Region IV Mental Health Center and members of the church, this year’s event proved to be the biggest yet. “We started the program in 2005 as a way to help children who would otherwise go without during the holi-

days,” said Region IV Executive Director Charlie Spearman. “The first couple of years, we were able to assist 40 children and their families. The numbers bloomed from there and this year, we were blessed with the ability to provide for 77 local children.” Each year, the staff at Region IV coordinates with teachers to identify and locate children who are at a disadvantage. They then go into the homes and determine the specific needs of each child. Once the needs are pinned down,
