One dead in Corinth homicide BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Corinth police are investigating a Wednesday night shooting death in a Tate Street home. Police Chief Ralph Dance said the victim is Paul D. Lavender, 49, of 1427 Tate Street.

A $23,000 fundraising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets can be given to local families.

“It appears he was shot in the bedroom where he was laying,” said Dance. “It may have been two different guns he was shot with. A witness stated that they saw two black males running from the scene, one with a handgun and one with a long gun, maybe some type of rifle.”

Basket Fund continues rise The 21st Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund continues to rise. A $23,000 fundraising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets can be given to local families beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 at the Crossroads Arena. The newspaper has received $7,060 in donations so far. Donations include a $50 gift from Barbara Taylor in memory of Leroy Hopkins. Christmas Basket Fund donations can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person or persons. The tribute will be published in the Daily Corinthian. Donations can be brought by the newspaper office or mailed to: Daily Corinthian, Attn.: Christmas Basket Fund, P.O. Box 1800, Corinth, MS 38835.

The police department received a call about 10:30 p.m. of a possible robbery or burglary. Dance said the victim’s fiancee came home and apparently noticed some things missing. She then went into the bedroom and found Lavender deceased.

Investigators are assessing what may have been taken from the scene by the assailants. Information about this case may be reported to the police department at 286-3377 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-773tips.

A Corinth man was killed in a crash near the state line Wednesday afternoon, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol is seeking an unknown commercial driver who left the scene. THP identified the deceased as Thomas N. Garner, 73, of Corinth. Witnesses described the hit-and-run vehicle as a white tractor pulling an empty log trailer. The crash happened at 3:36 p.m. about a mile north of the state line in Hardin County on Tennessee Highway 142, which is Kendrick Road on the Mississippi side. Garner was headed south in a 2008 Lincoln SGL when the southbound tractor pulling the log trailer began to pass him in a no-passing zone, according to THP, striking the rear driver’s side of the Lincoln, causing the vehicle to spin out of control. The Lincoln ran off the left side of the roadway, struck several trees, reentered the highway and collided with a northbound 1997 Mitsubishi Galant driven by Gary A. Dokey, 69, of Savan-

BIGGERSVILLE — Helping those who need help. Organizers with the 6th annual Biggersville Toy Drive are hoping to make this year their biggest ever as they collect donations in the drive hosted by Biggersville Fire & Rescue. “We’ve had donations come in pretty much every day since we began,” said Jonathan Rider. “Hopefully we will have even more before the deadline next week.” The organization is asking locals to donate new, unwrapped toys for children and families in need in the Big-

gersville community. “We partner with a ministry of Crossroads Baptist Church, led by Bill Chelmowski, that is based at Baxter’s Trailer Park,” said Rider. “Bill and his wife do a great job identifying those who need help and distributing the toys in the Biggersville community.” Rider said Chelmowski will also use some of the smaller

Jane Gurley likes being on the front lines to greet visitors at the Crossroads Museum as an occasional volunteer. “It’s a good way to spend your time and get out of the house,” said Gurley, who retired from Cortelco in 2003. “I like meeting people. We have a lot of people from out of the country, and I really enjoy talking with them.” She has learned much about the museum and Corinth history and enjoys sharing it with the visitors. She likes seeing the trains pass, but “the trains scared me to death at first because they come by so close to you,” said Gurley. A Corinth native who has two sons, she has always been interested in crafts, making dolls, purses and other creations.
