District expands graduation options BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

“The cast has worked so hard to make this a fun and enjoyable show ... and I think they have succeeded,” said producer Shannon Sellers.

The Alcorn County school district will soon offer another option for high school students to earn their diploma. The Alcorn School District Board of Education said Monday the district would join New Learning Resource – a state accredited program which provides students an opportunity to complete courses at a pace that best suits them on the road to earning their high school diploma. “This will provide another option for seniors who are struggling with passing the state test. After they have taken it the second or third time and are discouraged this provides them another option to get their diploma,” said Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell. “Most kids who have a desire to get their diploma are able to do so through this program.” Michell said when seniors complete the program they would have the option to receive either a standard diploma allowing them to attend a regular college or a career diploma where they could attend a career college or join the military. “Students in the program would remain in school

The Civitans and a group of 15 kids gathered at Taylor’s Escape to start the day with a fish and chicken lunch followed by a visit with Santa Claus. Next, they loaded up in buses for a trip to Joe’s Shoes, where each kid will get a new pair of shoes, and finally to

“Sometimes I’m a mother as well as a teacher,” said Brenda Finger, a staff member with Project Attention, where she helps children with their studies after school. She was proud to see kids from her first year with Project Attention in 2004 become graduating seniors this past school year. She likes to see the smiles on the faces of the children when they are learning. “I love all the hugs I get,” she said. A member of Mason St. Luke Baptist Church, she has a daughter with her husband, Daniel. In her spare time, she can often be found looking for a good sale. “I love shopping,” said Finger.
