A wrongful death lawsuit over a 2011 multiple-fatality crash in Alcorn County ended in a directed verdict in favor of the defense this week. In a special trial setting in Alcorn County Circuit Court, Judge Paul Funderburk found on Tuesday that the plaintiff’s case lacked evidence to support the claims in the suit filed by Ana Gloria Moreno of Morgan County, Ala., on behalf of the beneficiaries of Arnoldo Moreno. The suit sought compensatory and punitive damages from Randall S. Walker of Corinth, driver of the tractor trailer involved in the crash, and TLSL, Inc., of Walnut, the owner of the semi. The accident happened in November 2011 on U.S. Highway 72 at County Road 747 in western Alcorn County near the Tippah County line at about 5:15 a.m. Three men were pronounced dead at the scene — Arnoldo Moreno, 29; Juan A. Estrada, 35; and Jose P. GarciaGuillen, 35. A fourth person in the 2006 GMC pickup driven

GLEN — A superhero was honored in Bear County on Thursday. At the special ceremony held inside a packed Alcorn Central Middle School gym, those closest to him described the late Andrew Loyd as a lovable, always smiling

teddy bear. “He had a huge heart and wanted everyone to be happy, feel important and know they were loved,” said principal Nellie Massengill. “Webster’s Dictionary says a superhero has to be someone extraordinary ... Andrew was extraordinary.” In 2012, 11-year-old An-

Joy spreads through annual giveaway Kossuth BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

They call it the Toy Store. A better name might be the Joy Store. Plenty of Christmas joy was spread during the annual event of the Lighthouse Foundation on Thursday. Close to 200 volunteers packed the Lighthouse gym and grounds to help make Christmas brighter for over 500 families. One of those many volunteers assisting was Ashley Clausel. “I enjoy helping a hurting community,” said Clausel, who has been a volunteer fixture for around 12 years. “This is something little I can do to help so many people.”

Christmas music played inside and outside of the Lighthouse Foundation as eligible individuals were greeted with warm smiles. “So many dominations and people from different walks of life come to together to make this happen.” said volunteer Lauren Butler. “I love the fact parents are able to shop for their children and give the gifts to them on Christmas.” A trio of first-year volunteers saw the magic of the day. “I am here to give back and help someone else,” said a smiling Gloria Sheffield. Unlike the residential routes, the city competes with other commercial waste collection services for these customers. The street department recently purchased 45 new 6-yard and 8-yard dumpsters. ■ Curbside Class II Rubbish Collection – The city operates a Class II rubbish disposal site under permit from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. The only items allowed in a Class II site are natural wood and vegetation, concrete, dirt and asphalt. The city converts some of this

KOSSUTH — A small rural town is ready to show the rest of Alcorn County how much it loves its community. Residents of Kossuth will get their chance Saturday. The town is bringing the sites and sounds of Christmas to Aggie Land with its first Christmas parade. “The whole town is buzzing about bringing attention to the community we love,” said parade organizer Anthia FollinKing. “We are proud of our heritage and want to celebrate with a parade.” The parade, set for 4 p.m., will follow the route of the annual Kossuth High School Homecoming parade. “The parade will start at the arch and disband on the west side of campus at the softball complex,” said Follin-King. The organizer is asking spectators to enter via the north entrance of the school to keep traffic from bogging down on Highway 2. She is also requesting spectators leave a road open from the football field house to the new gym so entries can make their way back to the softball complex. “There will still be plenty of

Street department has many diverse tasks BY DAVID HUWE For the Daily Corinthian

(Editor’s Note: This is the fifth of a six-part series about the progress which has been made by the City of Corinth over the past four years.) The City of Corinth Street Department is largely divided into two groups: Solid Waste Division and Street Division. This department, while not the largest of those within the city, has the most diverse tasks of the various departments of the city. Through its Solid Waste Division, it provides service to residents and business owners through the

removal and disposal of generated waste. Through its Street Division, it maintains two vital pieces of Corinth’s infrastructure: streets and drainage structures.

Solid waste division ■ Residential Garbage Collection – The city services 5,048 residences with garbage pickup. To accomplish this, the department has five residential garbage trucks: three of which run regular routes Monday thru Friday, and all five of which are run on holiday routes. Owing to the im-

portance of this service for the health of the citizens and to assure the fleet of trucks is kept in service, the two latest rearload residential garbage trucks were purchased in April, 2011 and February, 2013 at a combined cost of about $231,000. ■ Commercial Garbage Collection – Corinth presently serves the garbage collection needs of 865 commercial customers, ranging from institutions such as churches to truly commercial customers such as stores and restaurants. The department has two commercial front-load trucks running one route Monday thru Saturday.
