Christmas classic hits CT-A stage BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
Continuing their “Year of Wonderment,” CorinthTheatre Arts will present the third show of their 2014-2015 season with their production of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Based on the film by Frank Capra and adapted for the stage by James Rogers, the timeless classic has become as ingrained in American culture as Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” “It’s a play that almost everyone is familiar with. Many have seen it numerous times and can even quote the lines,” said CT-A Guest Director Bryan Essary. “It will put you in the holiday mood … remind you how lovely, won-
derful and fortunate your life is and how great it is to have friends.” Chock full of thoughtprovoking moments, “It’s a Wonderful Life” relates the account of George Bailey, an “Everyman” from Bedford Falls whose life hasn’t turned out quite the way he expected. Plagued by a series of bad luck and misadventures, Bailey is on the verge of giving up when he receives a surprise visit on Christmas Eve. Descending from heaven in order to save him from himself, an angel shows George the world as it would have been had he never existed. After being plucked from the depths of his despair,
George soon discovers that he has after all, lived a wonderful life. “It’s a great American tale of redemption and realization,” said Phillip Henson who assumes the role of the plays compassionate hero. “George Bailey is taken to the greatest heights and lowest depths emotionally.” According to Essary, many life lessons will be communicated through the course of the play. “The production reminds us to be content with where God has placed us,” said Henson as he echoed the sentiments of the director. “Even if you don’t like ChristPlease see CLASSIC | 3
Anticipation is growing for the big election year that lies ahead. The qualifying period for county and state offices will open on Monday, Jan. 5, and run through Feb. 27. County candidates will qualify at the Circuit Clerk’s Office, where employees have already fielded a number of questions about the upcoming election season. Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell is hearing plenty of buzz about county posts, particularly several that may be without incumbents seeking reelection. “Last time, we had the most candidates that we’ve ever had, and I think this one will possibly have more,” he said. Qualifying to run requires visiting the clerk’s office to file a letter of intent. Partisan candidates pay a fee that goes to the respective political party. Independent candidates must gather the signatures of qualified voters on a petition with at least 15 for supervisor candidates and at least 50 for the other offices. The county offices to be decided include sheriff, chancery clerk, circuit clerk, tax assessor, tax collector, coroner, superintendent of education and county attorney. The county district offices to be decided include the five supervisors, the two justice court judges and the two constables. Counties that have an elected county surveyor, such as Tishomingo, will also see that post on the ballot. State offices to be decided include governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, auditor, treasurer, commissioner of insurance, commissioner of agriculture and commerce. State district offices to be decided include transportation commissioners, public service commissioners and district attorney. Mississippians will also elect senators and representatives to the state Legislature. The party primary election will be on Aug. 4, and the general election date is Nov. 3.
Sewer department serves 6,100 customers BY DAVID HUWE For the Daily Corinthian
(Editor’s Note: This is the fourth of a six-part series about the progress which has been made by the City of Corinth over the past four years.) The City of Corinth Sewer Department is responsible for collecting, treating and dis-
charging to the waters of the state of Mississippi the waste water that comes from each of our houses and businesses. Many of us have probably never considered that at the time that the city of Corinth was first established, there was no such thing as community sewage collection and treatment. Homes initially had

outhouses, which were an improvement to open cesspools and ditches for the disposal of waste. Larger cities had collection mains that simply dumped the raw sewage into streams or rivers. However, following outbreaks of cholera in London in the mid-1800s, there was a concerted effort to de-
velop a more sanitary way to collect and dispose of human waste. The earliest sewer collection lines in Corinth were constructed in the early-1900s, and emptied into a large septic tank located along Elam Creek. In the mid-1900s, the city built new sewer mains to Please see SEWER | 6
