Wreath ceremony honors veterans BY BOBBY J. SMITH bsmith@dailycorinthian.com
Members of the community are invited to be a part of a holiday wreathlaying ceremony at Corinth National Cemetery. The cemetery will host Wreaths Across America in honor of the nation’s veterans beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17. American Legion Unit 6 Auxiliary President Carlean Parker said volunteers will lay approximately 900 wreaths at the cemetery this year. “We want to invite everybody to come out and help with the wreathlaying and enjoy the ceremony,” said Parker. The event, coordinated through the National Cemetery Administration, brings veteran service organizations and citizens together to honor veterans of each branch of the military, the Merchant Marines, prisoners of war and those still missing in action. Wreaths Across America traces its roots back to 1992, when the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine, made arrangements to place wreaths in an older section of Arlington National Cemetery that had been seeing few visitors in recent

The Wreaths Across America website tells his story. “The experience followed him throughout his life and successful career, reminding him that his good fortune was due, in large part, to the values of this nation and the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” the website explained. The event picked up momentum each year. By 2014, Wreaths Across America laid over 700,000 memorial wreaths at 1,000 locations in the U.S., including 226,525 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery.
