A section of Waldron Street where a large pipe collapsed under the roadway is now closed awaiting repairs, which are expected to begin today. A replacement arch pipe 7 feet tall and 11 feet wide is expected to arrive this morning. Street Commissioner Philip Verdung

said it should take about three days to complete the repair and get the street reopened. The street was kept open for a few days following the collapse, but Verdung decided on Friday afternoon to close the spot on Waldron between the railroad tracks and Bell Gas near North Fulton Drive. The street level had sunk about an inch

since the night before and was deemed no longer safe to carry traffic. It has sunk about 2 feet more since Friday evening. Verdung asks that the public heed the barricades. At least one person has been observed moving the barricades and driving across the unsafe area. The collapsed pipe is where Elam Creek passes under the

roadway. The Board of Aldermen on Tuesday approved the purchase of a replacement alumanized pipe at a cost of approximately $23,000 from G & O Supply of Tupelo. The estimated total repair cost is $35,000. The existing pipe has been there for many years and finally gave out with age.

Rep. Bain delivers two updated state seals BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Four words are joining the state seal on display in two Corinth courtrooms. District 2 Rep. Nick Bain recently donated two new Mississippi state seals updated with the words “In God We Trust” as adopted during the 2014 session of the legislature. One is going up at Chancery Court and the other at Circuit Court. “When people come to court, chancery or circuit, usually something bad has happened to them, whether it’s a divorce, child custody, a criminal action or they’re being sued,” said Bain, a practicing lawyer. “That’s why I wanted to place them in the court, so that when they look at those, they are reminded that it is in God that we put our trust.” Bain said the bill did not make it mandatory to immediately replace existing seals at taxpayer expense. As any are removed, they are to be replaced with a seal including the state and national motto. Accepting the donations

Scavenger hunt offers FUMC music ministry will host celebration cash prize BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

CorinthFIRST is using a simple idea to lure shoppers into their hometown stores: a shot at free money. The seven-week Christmas Scavenger Hunt is putting a $25 gift certificate from a different Corinth business in a hiding place each week and giving the public clues of where to find it. It is an idea that came out of the Community Development Committee of The Alliance, which aims to promote local commerce with the CorinthFIRST program. “It was done in another community and really helped to get people excited about going in the local stores,” said Community Development Director Andrea Rose. This is week five of the program, and the previous certificates have been hidden at locations such as the Coliseum Civic Center, Biggers Hardware, Gardner’s Supermarket and Sweet E’s Bake Shop. “This week, we have a twopart clue,” said Rose. “They are getting progressively harder.” Please see HUNT | 2

In celebration of the birth of Christ, the Music Ministry of First United Methodist Church will hold a “Canticles in Candlelight” Christmas presentation at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21 in Fillmore Street Chapel. Owned by First United Methodist Church since the mid-1970s, the historic chapel is used for special worship occasions and is offered for community use. A popular wedding venue and the site of numerous concerts and recitals, Fillmore Street Chapel has been the primary place of worship for the FUMC congregation since June 2014 as they await the renovation of their main sanctuary. “This is the first time, as far as our records indicate, that the congregation has worshiped exclusively in the Chapel during Advent. The intimate setting of the Cha-

pel should create a wonderful worship experience for those in attendance,” said Ken Lancaster director of the Chancel Choir of FUMC. “We hope and pray that, as a church, we can share the joy and excitement of Christ’s birth with not only members of our congregation, but also with music lovers all

over the larger Corinth community.” The choir will be accompanied by church organist/ pianist Sara Ellington, along with brass and woodwind instruments. Featured soloists include Jenny Hawkins and Janet Wallace. “Canticles in Candlelight”

uses music, scripture, narration and the lighting of candles to convey the story of Jesus’ birth. “As the program begins, the Chapel lights will be dimmed, except for candles in the stained glass windows. Before each movement of the Cantata, a candle will be lit, representing the themes of Prophecy, Hope, Peace, Joy, Love, Adoration, Worship, Faith, Light, and finally, the Christ candle,” Lancaster explained. “The cantata is made up of both new anthems, and arrangements of familiar Christmas songs such as ‘Jesu Bambino’, ‘Joy to the World’, ‘The First Noel’ and ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’. The arrangements are well written and the original pieces are both inspiring and enjoyable for the listener.” The community is invited to attend what is sure to be a memorable event.

might choose to be proactive during this time and change the course of the future in its favor as best as it is able. Over Please see ECONOMY | 3
