Arena hosts 3-day gun, knife show BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Ready to make a bang. A pair of gun businesses are hoping to do just that in combining to bring a gun show to the Crossroads. The Crossroads Gun & Knife Show is scheduled for three days at the Crossroads Arena over Black Friday Weekend. “The show will be an event where people can come to one place and see what is out there when it comes to guns and knives,” said Big Bang Trading Company’s Brad Mattox. Mattox and Justin Tull of T&T Sporting Goods of Selmer, Tenn. hatched the idea of bringing a local event to the area. “It will be a perfect time to take care of some Christmas shopping,” said Tull. Friday’s show is set for 3-7 p.m. Saturday’s event is slated for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Sunday’s time being 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $8 for the weekend with children 12 and under admitted free. “We are excited to bring the first gun show to Corinth in several years,” said Tull. “We do a bunch of gun shows a year and wanted to have a local event,” added Mattox. The show will consist of both

Mother on mission to educate about diabetes BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Educating others about a hereditary disease which affects an estimated 1.5 million American children and adults with 13,000 diagnosed each year, one mother is on a mission to inform others about the warnings, signs and symptoms associated with Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes. In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month, Mia Nickels of Nickel Signs and Graphics and her son, Holden, are sharing their personal struggles in hopes it will encourage others to seek testing and if necessary, treatment at an earlier stage. Diagnosed in March of this year at the age of 6, Holden Nickels is like most children. He likes

hanging out with friends, enjoying outdoor activities and spending time with his family. He plays guitar, skateboards and participates in football. From the outside, he appears to be your average healthy second grader, but looks can be deceiving. “I knew something was wrong almost a year prior to his diagnosis. His food allergies had gotten increasingly worse, he was vomiting after starchy meals like pizza and pasta, and he had increasingly upsetting neurological, anxiety and behavioral issues which were later linked to high blood sugar,” said Mia as she recalled the months of the onset. “I took him to several doctors, but nothing stood out to them as unusual and we continued to move

around from specialist to specialist.” It was while on a trip to Chattanooga, Tenn. in mid-March that things would take a turn for the worst. “His energy was low, his thirst was excessive, and his need to visit the restroom was way above his norm, making for a very long trip. When we returned home, I called our family physician and explained what was going on. She told me to bring him in early the next morning for blood work,” said the graphic artist who, at the time, was at her wits end with the mysterious malady affecting her child. “Within an hour of walking into the lab, we were transporting him to Le Bonheur Children’s Please see HOLDEN | 5A
