Storm causes power outages, flooding BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth area had some power outages and minor street flooding as a potent storm system blew through the Mid-South Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, officials reported.

The city had minor street flooding, but problems emerged with both of the underpasses that are equipped with pumps. “We had two floats go out at the Fulton Drive underpass, so the pumps were not working properly,” said Street Commissioner Philip Verdung. “The

Cass Street underpass flooded quickly and was not pumping it down as it should. We’re working to figure out what the problem is now.” He reported minor limbs down in the city, and Emergency Services Coordinator Ricky Gibens reported the same in the

county. Given the persistent gusty winds, “We were really fortunate,” he said. ACE Power Engineer Jason Grisham said there was one substantial power outage affecting 550 customers for about an hour after some lines were

downed. It happened about 7:45 p.m., well ahead of the rain approaching from the west. Smaller outages were scattered throughout the county. The weekend will bring cooler weather with highs in the 50s on Saturday and 40s on Sunday.

Tourism, sales tax sets high marks

‘Fall’s premier event’

BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Tax collections continue to climb with both the sales and tourism taxes setting new high marks in the latest reported month. Corinth’s share of sales tax proceeds deposited into the city coffers this week is $524,434.89, an increase of about $34,000, or 7 percent, from the same month a year ago. The result reflects sales activity in local businesses during the month of September. It’s the first time the November deposit has topped $500,000 and follows a modest increase of 0.8 percent last month to open the new fiscal year. The year-to-date total of $1.024 million is now ahead of the same point in the prior fiscal year by 3.8 percent, or almost $38,000. The Mississippi Department of Revenue returned funds totaling $35.136 million to cities across the state, a 3 percent increase from the prior year. Ten of 12 area municipalities posted gains for the month. The 2 percent tourism tax on food and lodging vaulted ahead by 13 percent with
