Search for rape suspect continues BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

After a long night of searching, the hunt for jail escapee Garnett Denzell Hughes continued Saturday. At 2:20 p.m., Sheriff Charles Rinehart and others were in the wooded area behind the Alcorn County Regional Correctional Facility seeking any sign of the two-

time escapee. The sheriff said officials had been discussing whether it is likely Hughes, who is considered dangerous, is still in the area or had managed to leave. “If he stayed out last night, he would have froze to death,” said Rinehart. An early cold snap saw a low temperature of 23 in the city Saturday morning.

Hughes, who was awaiting trial for rape, escaped from the South Harper Road facility Friday afternoon, leaving behind an injured jailer who was taken to Magnolia Regional Health Center for treatment. Rinehart said he had not had an opportunity to speak with the jailer, but it appeared he had suffered a broken nose and other head injuries.

Since Friday’s escape, the Corinth Police Department has responded to a number of reported sightings in the city, but none have panned out, said Police Chief Ralph Dance. FARMINGTON — A community church is bringing God’s Word to the people. Farmington Baptist Church kicks off a four-day Bible Conference Sunday morning at 11 a.m. with Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary Professor of Theological and Historical Studies Dr. John Mahony leading the service. Mahony will also be leading the evening service at 6 p.m. “Our goal is for people to hear the Word of God and see the value in it,” said Farmington Interim Pastor/Children and Youth Minister Jarrod Cox. “I think this will be good for the church and show Farmington Baptist Church is still going strong.” The conference continues Monday thru Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. each night. Local officials are doing all the right things to attract new industry to the Crossroads area, according to TVA’s General Manager of Global Business Heidi Smith. While in Corinth recently for the 20th Annual Meeting of The Alliance, Smith toured the area’s newest industrial park -- the more than 400 acres located off the Kimberly Clark Parkway east of Corinth. “What’s happening in Corinth is very good,” said Smith. “Officials are doing everything needed to be competitive in this market. Over time companies will locate here.” Smith is responsible for TVA’s Economic Development’s business recruitment and retention and community development

Red Green Market offers unique gifts BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Before Black Friday, there’s Red Green Saturday. The final and biggest Green Market of the year — the Red Green Market — will offer an opportunity to do some Christmas shopping next Saturday. It is set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the depot. Among the sellers who never miss a market is Glenda Newcomb of Iuka, who, along with husband Chester, offers a variety of handmade items from crosses to tin can flowers to signs made from barn wood.

It wasn’t until ending her daycare of 22 years that she began to focus on producing handmade goods. Her husband had begun over the road truck driving, and she would travel with him every other week. “The weeks I stayed at home, I was lost,” said Newcomb. “That’s when I started. It filled the space I had.” She likes to use old materials including barn wood for her creations. Living on her

grandfather’s old home place, she found an ample supply. “His barn was across the road from us, and it was falling down,” said Newcomb. “They were going to have it torn down, so we took it down piece by piece and saved all that lumber for my projects. I like the old stuff like that better than I do new lumber. Every time I’m working on that piece of
