ATV fire destroys garage BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Homeowners are blaming an ATV for starting a fire that destroyed their garage Saturday afternoon.
Rita Corder was in her home with her family when they first heard a popping sound. “My daughter heard something, but she didn’t know what it was,” said Rita.
The fire started around 2:15 p.m. at the North Corinth residence near Alcorn Drive and Scenic Lake Drive. Please see FIRE | 2A
Earlier this week, school leaders took the first step in what could become a historic move by the Alcorn School District. All five board members unanimously approved a resolution to change the selection of the county school board superintendent from elected by the people to appointed by the board. Board president Mary Coleman said the move will help take politics out of the school system — a place where politics she said shouldn’t play a role. “This is a big step, and although it may not be the best answer for the problem at hand, I think it is a step in the right direction,” said Coleman during the Nov. 9 meeting.
Board member Russ Nash is the driving force behind the resolution and says he has already received feedback from the community regarding the possible change. “I have heard from some parents and a few teachers and administrators in the school system. Everything has mostly been positive,” he said. “I think some people are a bit confused. Some folks think that the resolution would force the board members to have to be appointed, as well, but that’s not true. This change would only affect the superintendent.” As currently written, the district’s resolution urges the Mississippi Legislature and the governor to support the passage of a bill to change the Please see APPOINT | 2A

It is a free event with free admission to the depot museum.
Inside, Photos with Santa will be available for $15 with proceeds going to the Save the Fire Truck campaign. Holiday-themed music will be provided by the Courthouse Pickers and others.
