Rienzi man gets 7-year drug sentence A Rienzi man has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison for his role in an alleged conspiracy to distribute cocaine and marijuana throughout Northeast Mississippi. Eric Mills of Rienzi was sentenced on Nov. 4 in U.S. District Court in Oxford to 90 months in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A third count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a drug trafficking crime was dropped as part of his plea agreement.. Mills must also serve three years on post-release supervision following his release. Mills was one of 10 individuals indicted in November 2012 on the conspiracy charge. The indictment alleges the group arranged the purchase and shipment of drugs into the region and set up several “stash houses” to store the drugs before they were distributed.

A fixture at a downtown church assumed its rightful place Monday afternoon. As members documented the occasion, the First United Methodist Church steeple was lifted some 75-80 feet in the air and put in place. The steeple, a part of the church since it was built in 1959, had been removed along with a cross which sat atop on July 18 to be refurbished and powder coated at Mid-South Powder Coating in Burnsville. First United Methodist Church is planning an official lighting and dedication ceremony on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. “I couldn’t have gone another day without it being put up,” said church trustee committee member Todd Taylor. “It was supposed to be put up three different times, but things just kept getting in the way.” LED lighting was also added during the facelift so the steeple

With the interest of aviation in the area on the decline, an attempt to ignite the younger generation has been launched. However, this launch will take flight in the classroom way before getting off the runway, according to Donna Briggs, Airport Manager of the Corinth-Alcorn County Airport at Roscoe Turner Field. “We are so excited about now being able to offer flight instruction to the local citizens of the Crossroads community,” Briggs said. “It has been too long since we have been able to offer this type of instruction and I think this is going to be a good thing.” Briggs said flight instruction was available several years ago, by Mr. Loyd Bor-

A 13-year-old Thrasher student was airlifted to a Memphis hospital after being struck by a car near the campus Monday afternoon. The 17-year-old driver, also a Thrasher student, stated she was going north on County Road 1040 at a very low speed when a small girl standing on the side of the roadway turned and stepped into the right side of her car, said Prentiss County Sheriff Randy Tolar. The girl’s head struck the windshield. A witness who lives across the road from the school also said the driver was driving at a very low rate of speed when the accident happened, Tolar said. The 13-year-old was conscious, speaking and moving her upper extremities prior to being airlifted to LeBonheur, he said. The sheriff declined to release the names of those involved due to their ages.

CARE-ing for sidewalks The CARE Community Foundation is offering property owners a smooth opportunity. Residential property owners in the city have the chance to repair their cracked and damaged sidewalks with the assistance of CARE. “We are well pleased with the work we have done,” said CARE Executive Director Mona Lisa Grady of the initiative started in June of 2010. “It has made an incredible difference for property owners.” Tommy Ledbetter is one of the property owners who took advantage of the initiative. “Through the years roots had caused the sidewalk to come up in some places,” said Ledbetter after walking his dog, Boo, on Monday afternoon. “It made for a rough walk with the cracks.” The owner had around 100 feet of repairs made. “I wish more people would take advantage of it,” he said. “It’s a good initiative and good for the neighborhood.” Since 2010, 39 property owners have benefited from the CARE plan. Close to a mile of sidewalks have been repaired
