State closes inmate labor program BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Two Alcorn County high schools were placed on cautionary lockdown Tuesday morning as law enforcement searched each campus. Alcorn County deputies, Narcotics unit and K-9 officers conducted the approximately 90-minute search of school grounds, which included student backpacks, lockers and vehicles, at Kossuth High School and Alcorn Central High School. “It was a Code White lockdown,” said KHS Principal Travis Smith. “The administration was unaware they were coming. It was a completely random, unannounced search.” Smith said he could not confirm if anything was discovered during the search at either school, and attempts to reach deputies for comment were

nation is great right now and we need to do somethings to turn it around, honoring our veterans is one thing we could do.” Pope, MS Project Package Coordinator and Founder, took a brief time to share what Project Package does. The Alcorn County Community Work Center, which housed inmate laborers from the Joint State Work Program, was temporarily shut down Tuesday afternoon. Agents with the Mississippi Department of Corrections removed all remaining inmates from the facility, and at this time work crews are no longer available to local agencies who rely on inmate labor. In a press release sent Wednesday, MDOC Commissioner Marshall Fisher said the closure was not related to the removal of 240 state inmates from the Alcorn County Regional Correctional Facility on Oct. 29. “We are suspending operations at the CWC until further notice for security reasons,” said Fisher. Agents removed 11 inmate laborers from the facility last Thursday. Fisher said the facility housed 90 offenders as of a month ago. Inmates included those receiving alcohol and drug treatment and those participating in the Joint State Work Program. Thirteen employees at the center are being transferred to other jobs in the prison system and, according to Fisher, the Alcorn CWC can no longer be adequately staffed. “We are evaluating all community work centers,” Fisher said. “We are constantly assessing and reassessing how well we are carrying out our mission to maintain public safety, and when we find the need to make changes in the interest of public safety, we make them.” Fisher could give no timetable on when inmate labor would return to Alcorn County, but said it may be temporary. “We have already started transition talks with the new sheriff (Ben Caldwell),” he said. Local agencies that depend on inmate labor for daily operation, including the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter, Alcorn County Supervisor districts, City of Corinth and Alcorn County Courthouse, among others. “Inmate labor is extremely important to so many organizations in the county,” said Caldwell. “It is truly a tremendous benefit for so many like the animal shelter and the supervisor’s district work crews.” The Board of Supervisors moved regional correctional facility and

A Corinth man was one of two killed in a head-on crash in south Tishomingo County early Wednesday. The Mississippi Highway Patrol identified the deceased as William Blake Lambert, 32, of Corinth, and Jacob S. Murphy, 30, of Tishomingo. It happened about 4 a.m. in the Dennis area on Mississippi Lambert Highway 25. The highway patrol said Murphy was traveling south in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado when he apparently crossed into the northbound lane, colliding with a 2008 Ford F-150 driven by Lambert. Both died at the scene. A welder, Lambert worked at SunAir Products in Belmont. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Corinthian Funeral Home.
