Nickels Signs and Graphics employee Bobby Hall hangs an American flag early Friday morning on Fillmore Street in front of Dodd Eye Clinic. The flag will be one of 16 to 30 presented on holidays such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Fourth of July along Fillmore and Cruise streets in downtown Corinth.

Now that the holiday season is in full gear, local Crossroads business owners are asking shoppers to “Shop at Home. Local retail shops are encouraging residents to help the local economy to continue to improve by shopping and buying items here in town. Andrea Rose, Community Development Director of the Alliance said shopping locally is a great way to improve our local economy. “When consumers purchase items and use service providers in our community, it puts those dollars directly into our community, said Rose. “These dollars go to pay sala-

ries and provide jobs, keeps tax money in our community to provide services through our local government, and supports the local businesses. Rose also emphasized these local businesses are the ones who are the first to step-up and volunteer their time, energy and resources when there is a specific need by the community. “Shopping locally promotes our local economy and is just a good idea, Rose added. “These folks are the ones who are always there to lend a helping hand. For every $100 spent locally, as much as $68 returns to Please see HOME | 3A

Flags fly throughout downtown Alcorn Central bags bucks for technology BY MARK BOEHLER

Corinth business owner Fred Nickels spent his entire formative years growing up on military bases as his father was serving his country in the U.S. Army. He liked seeing Old Glory flying above wherever the family was stationed. Nickels' dream was to the see the American flag throughout historic downtown Corinth on patriotic holidays.

Thanks to Corinth Mayor Tommy Irwin and the City of Corinth, Nickels dream can now be seen as the stars and stripes will watch over the Veterans Day Parade and remain up until after Thanksgiving. Between 16 to 30 two-foot by three-foot embroidered flags on light poles will return for Memorial Day and the Fourth as July as Nickels Signs and Graphics is donating products and services to the project.

“I'm very proud, said Nickels as the first flag went up Friday morning in front of Dodd Eye Clinic. “I've been pushing this for awhile. “I wanted to contribute to this effort, added the Nickels. “It's our way of giving back. “We are not a vendor, he said. “We are a partner with the city. After going before several organizations with no success, Please see FLAGS | 2A

Huff’s service taught lifetime lessons BY JOSEPH MILLER jmiller@dailycorinthian.com

The journey of one local Crossroads veteran brought him from Farmington Grammar School to Brigadier General of the United States Army. Bill Huff, a native of Corinth, began his education in 1945 at Farmington Grammar School and got his general education from Corinth High School in 1955. After graduating from CHS, he joined the military, and later received his United States Armed Forces Institute GED in 1957 and started his journey in the Army at the young age of 16. “I was a young man who wanted to serve my country, and back then the government didn’t really check your identification or age, they just wanted folks to enlist so I got in, Huff explained. “I went to boot-camp at Fort Smith in Arkansas and from there I volunteered for jump school then went to the Eighty-Second Airborne Division. I had six jumps before I

was 17 years old! The Vietnam veteran’s list of accomplishments since his first jump as a teenager are almost unbelievable to some. Over an approximate 47 year period of both active and reserve duty, Huff was a part of the Airborne Infantry, fire team leader, recon scout team leader, parachute instructor, tank platoon leader, company commander, executive officer and a battalion commander -- just to name a few. In 2001 he was the retired Mississippi State Guard Colonel, in 2002 he was the U.S. Army Volunteer Reserve Brigade Commander and later in that year he was promoted to Brigadier General. “At 18 years old I was voted as the soldier of the month as an E-4 Corporal and after 11 years of active duty I transferred to the reserves as an E-6 Staff Sergeant, Huff said. “President George Bush promoted me to Brigadier General in the Army Volunteer Reserves and that

GLEN — Alcorn Central is taking the trash out in effort to bag a new computer lab. Assistant principal Brandon Quinn pitched the unique idea of selling garbage bags to the public during a communitywide meeting on Thursday. Proceeds from the endeavor will be used to modernize the technology lab at the school. “A lot of our technology is out-of-date, said Quinn. “We

have some computers here that are seven or eight years old ‌ by buying the bags, individuals can help the school and get a quality product in return.â€? Money collected from the fundraiser will not only upgrade the computer lab, but also give students modern equipment to take online testing which is required by the state next year. “We will also try to purchase a mobile iPad lab that can be Please see LAB | 2A

The women who proudly serve our country are recognized as a vital part of the military. A resident of Corinth, Gentry Parker, is one of those women. Parker served as a Military Police (MP) in the United States Army and spent a 15 month tour in Iraq after enlisting in the reserves in 1986 in her mid 20s. She is a 14 year veteran who never had plans to join the armed forces at all. “I was married to an officer in my first marriage and never really had any intentions of joining the military myself, Parker said. “That all changed one day,

after college, when I went back home to visit my parents in Raleigh, N.C. and went to a party on fraternity row at N.C. State, and the next morning I saw a reserve unit doing drill. I said to myself, that looks cool with them in their uniform and all. So, I stopped at a pay phone and dialed the recruiters office and the rest is history. Parker told the recruiter she was ready to serve her country and took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) in which she scored high enough to choose her job category for the Army.
