Absentee voting concludes today BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Absentee voters will get their last chance to submit their vote in Tuesday’s general election today. The Alcorn County Circuit Clerk’s office will be open today from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., to help
accommodate those last minute voters. “It has been a busy week,” said circuit clerk Joe Caldwell. “We haven’t slowed down taking absentees from people who will be out of town or those who are over 65 years of age.” Caldwell said his office has
received 239 absentees so far and excepts a good turn out on the final day. “We’ve had a lot of calls from people asking if we will be open,” he said. Tuesday’s ballot includes the heated U.S. Senate race between Democrat and former
U.S. Representative and Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers, a Booneville native, and six-term Republican incumbent Thad Coahran. Reform candidate Shawn O’Hara will also appear on the ballot. Current 1st Congressional District House Representative
and Republican candidate Alan Nunnelee will face competition from Democrat Ron E. Dickey, Libertarian Danny Badwell and Reform candidate Lajenna Walley. Locals will also have the opPlease see VOTING | 2

Overturned 18-wheeler shuts down streets BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Portions of Shiloh Road and Taylor Street were shut down for five hours on Friday. An 18-wheeler carrying a load of plywood overturned around 8:55 a.m. at the intersection of Shiloh and Taylor, forcing traffic to be detoured until 2 p.m. Rico Lamar Thomas of Arkansas was trying to make his
way to Timber Products on Harper Road when the truck he was driving for Evergreen America Corporation of Jersey City, N.J. turned on its side. Bryan Price’s construction crew was working near the railroad bridge underpass when the accident happened. “He saw he couldn’t get through the underpass and tried backing up to turn on Taylor Street,” said Price.
As the driver attempted to turn onto Taylor, his tire went off the road onto the wet ground from Thursday night’s rain. “When he tried to get out of the mud, his tires started spinning and the truck turned over,” said Corinth Police Chief Ralph Dance. According to officer Robert Loyd, Thomas was treated and released from Magnolia Regional Health Center after be-
ing transported via ambulance. “He was okay and back at the scene,” said Dance. Diesel leakage from the truck caused a Hazmat Team from Decatur, Ala. to be called in to clean up the spill. Price said trucks having problems with the underpass is normal. “My crew said this was the fourth time this week a truck has hit the bridge,” said Price.
An investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment of a former Jackson, Tenn. and Selmer, Tenn. police officer and his uncle on charges of filing false reports and tampering with evidence, according to the TBI. At the request of 25th District Attorney General Mike Dunavant and 26th District Attorney General Jerry Woodall, TBI agents and the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Criminal Investigation Division began investigating Blake Huckabee on June 26, with the assistance of the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department and Chester County Sheriff’s Office.
