FARMINGTON — By far the area’s largest Halloween event, Farmington’s Trunk or Treat will make its return Friday night. Started eight years ago by Farmington officials, the event provides a safer and easier way for kids and parents to enjoy the festivities on All Hallows Eve. “We enjoy Trunk or Treat,” said city clerk Debbie Jackson. “It’s an event the city of Farmington can really be proud of.” Jackson said she anticipates 1,000 trick-or-treaters, and is encouraging more people to come set up and hand out candy. “We can never have to many people handing out candy. The more the better,” she said. “Folks are encouraged to decorate their trunks for the event as well.” The event is set for 5:30 to 8 p.m., at Farmington Fire and Rescue located behind the Farmington City Hall. Parking will be in front of City Hall. “It’s nice that we can offer a event that gives everyone a way to take the kids out for candy without going door to door in an area with no sidewalks,” added Jackson. People who wish to set up a spot are encouraged to arrive no later than 5 p.m. Spots are “first come, first serve.” For more information, contact the City Hall at 662-6659647. Other Halloween week

activities include: ■ The First United Methodist Church on Fillmore Street will host a Tent or Treat event on the chapel lawn. The event, set for Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m., will feature joy jumpers, lots of candy, free hot dogs and drinks and lots of fun. ■ First Baptist Church in downtown Corinth will host a Family Fall Festival this week. The public is welcome to attend the event, set for Wednesday night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall. Fun, games, candy and more is promised at the event, where costumes are not a requirement to attend. ■ The popular Films on Fillmore presented by Regions Bank and Main Street Corinth is slated to make its return on Halloween night. The free showing of “Monsters University” will take place in the C.A.R.E. Garden on Fillmore Street in front of the Corinth Depot. Kids are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costume for a special trick or treating event set to kick off at 7:15 p.m. Those attending should bring lawn chairs and blankets. Popcorn and drinks will be available at the event. ■ Oakland Baptist Church on Harper Road will host a Family Fall Festival on Friday at 5 p.m. The festival will include games, food and candy.

Mayor Walter Williams is presented with Rienzi’s Purple Heart award by Commander Louis E. Harris.

Master Gardeners were a pleasant sight at the Alcorn County Welcome Center. Six local gardeners and Patrick Poindexter, County Director with the Mississippi State Extension Service, used their horticultural expertise to spruce things up at the welcome center on Monday morn-

dian Hawthorns, two lavender Crape myrtles, a Blue Rug Juniper and some monkey grass to be added around the Mississippi sign near the entrance. “We will come back in the spring and add some color,” said Poindexter. Master Gardeners working on the project were Lynn Please see GARDENERS | 2
