A Community Development Block Grant of $530,000 will help a rural water association serve some new customers in Alcorn County. The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors this week approved the agreement for the grant on behalf of the Chalybeate Water System. While located in Tippah County, the association sought Alcorn County as the grant agent because the planned expansion will benefit Alcorn residents. The association already serves some customers in western Alcorn County, and the expansion will add another 12 to 15 homes while also improving water pressure for about 100 homes. Chalybeate is not an incorporated town and needed a local government to serve as a grant agent. In other business: • New hospital chief Ronny Humes presented the quarterly report and introduced new administrative officials. Humes said it’s a difficult

Lighthouse Foundation prepares for Toy Store Flu shots BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com

Christmas is just around the corner and as children begin dreaming of presents under the tree the Lighthouse Foundation is again gearing up to help local families struggling to afford holiday cheer. Since 1995 the Lighthouse Foundation Toy Store has provided help for those families through one of the region’s largest Christmas gift programs. Registration begins in November for this year’s edition of the program. “We’re expecting the biggest need we’ve ever had,” said Lighthouse Foundation Execu-

tive Director Gary Caveness. The Toy Store allows families to choose gifts for their children during the annual shopping day, this year set for Dec. 12. Each recipient will also have the opportunity to visit with Lighthouse volunteers and pray with them. The program begins each year with the registration process which opens Nov. 4 and runs each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon from then through Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the foundation’s center on South Johns Street in Corinth. There will also be a pair of night sessions on Nov. 21 and Dec. 2, both at 6 p.m., for those

who are unable to register during the day. Applicants should bring photo identification for themselves, proof of residency in Alcorn County (such as a utility bill or rent receipt) and Social Security cards and birth certificates for each child. Caveness said with a great need and limited resources, it’s vital all those who want help from the program register. “We’ve got to get these people in to sign up. There’s so many hurting people out there,” he said. The foundation depends on the community to help it meet the massive need and donations are always needed

available

to support the program. Caveness said they’re blessed to live in a community that takes care of its own and he knows there’s no way they could provide they help they do without the enormous outpouring of support they receive each year. “This can’t just be done by the Lighthouse Foundation. It has to be a community thing. It’s a wonderful experience to see everyone come together,” he said. For more information on the Lighthouse Foundation and the Toy Store, call them at 662-286-0091. Donations may also be mailed to Lighthouse Foundation Toy Store, P.O. Box 2121, Corinth, MS 38835.

County health departments are armed for the fight against the runny noses and fatigue of the flu. Seasonal flu shots are now available at all Mississippi State Department of Health county clinics. The shot is recommended for everyone older than six months. Several different shots are available to adults this year: ■ The standard seasonal flu vaccine or nasal mist for $30; ■ The quadrivalent flu vaccination, which includes four strains rather than three, for $30; ■ High-dose flu vaccination for those ages 65 and older for $55; and ■ Pneumonia vaccination for $83. Children eligible for the Vaccines for Children program or the Children’s Health Insurance Program can get the flu shot for $10; otherwise, the cost is also $30 for those under 18. Flu activity usually peaks in January through March. “The flu shot is absolutely your best protection against the flu,” said Dr. Mary Currier, state health officer. “Mississippians should take the flu seriously and get a yearly flu shot.” It is especially recommended for those particularly at risk for complications, including young children, adults 50 and older, pregnant women and people who have chronic illnesses.
