Farmers and Merchants Bank has recently invested in the purchase of the former SouthBank locations in Corinth. The branches, located at 515 North Fillmore Street in the historic post office building in downtown Corinth and at 2222 South Harper Road (across from Walmart), were reopened on Friday, Oct. 17 as branches of FMBank. “On behalf of the FMBank Board of Directors, we wish to express our excitement over the Corinth additions to our community bank network. The man accused of killing two brothers and setting their house on fire pleaded guilty Monday and received a net sentence of life plus 10 years in custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Sirdon Copanion Greer Greer appeared during a plea and revocation session of Alcorn County Circuit Court to plead guilty on two separate indictments including the murder cases and his subsequent jail escape. The victims in the February murder case were James Copeland, 67, and Jerry Copeland, 64. Autopsy results showed they were shot in the head with a .410 shotgun before the shooter set fire to their home at 912 Second Street. Police said it appeared to be a domestic situation — Greer was apparently looking for one of the victims’ son, who was dating his estranged wife. A nephew, Paul Copeland, delivered emotional testimony

Deputy police chief retiring after 26 years BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

For 26 years, Scotty Harville has found a second home with the Corinth Police Department. As a young man, the Corinth native was eager to join the police force. He recalled looking up to policemen and firemen as a boy and deciding early on that he wanted to be a part of the excitement. “It’s never boring,” said Harville, who will retire in the next few weeks. “All the way back to being the patrolman working the street, working traffic, I enjoyed it. There’s always something different going on. Every day, you could have a new experience.” The Corinth native first sought to become an officer in 1982. Unsuccessful on the first try, he joined the Navy, serving four years while stationed in Norfolk,

Va. A couple of years after his return, the Corinth Police Department hired him in 1988. After 10 years as a patrolman, he was promoted to detective sergeant. After a couple of years in that role, he returned to patrol and then was promoted to captain. Finally, in 2006, he was promoted to deputy chief. For about five years, he was part of the department’s DUI unit. “I always liked getting the drunk drivers off the road,” he said. “I had family, and I felt like that was making a difference.” And he enjoyed the opportunity to meet all kinds of people and help with their problems. “When I was able to solve burglary cases and get people’s stuff back, they would be
