The “Movie Memphis Belle” B-17 Flying Fortress is available for tours and flights this weekend at the Olive Branch Airport.

Movie plane available for flights, tours In a flight that defies description, 11 passengers who were mostly members of the media were given the rare opportunity to relive history on Wednesday as they took a 15 minute flight in the “Movie Memphis Belle”, a Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress Bomber used in the making of the 1990 film “Memphis Belle.” Repainted in 1989 to look like the iconic “Memphis Belle”, the fully restored WWII bomber was brought to the Olive Branch Airport as part of the Liberty Foundation’s 2014 Salute to Veterans Tour. In celebration of the 71st anniversary of its historic last mission, the look-a-like aircraft sliced through the clouds over Memphis, providing breathtaking views of the bluff city at

15,000 feet. Known for its iconic silhouette and unique sound, the original “Memphis Belle”, assigned to the 91st Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in Bassingbourn, England, currently resides in a restoration hangar in the National Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Founded by Don Brooks in honor of his father, the thousands who served in the 91st Bomb Group and the many who fought for the allies, The Liberty Foundation hopes to inspire others to learn more about WWII, the aircrafts and the veterans who served. “The Liberty Foundation would not be what it is today were it not for the media. In fact, it was the media who dubbed it as a ‘Flying Fortress’,” said Volunteer Pilot Bob Hill.

“They took one look at it after it rolled off the production belt and decided it looked like a flying fortress.” With a decade of flying for the foundation under his belt, Hill has been the steward of the aircraft for 220 hours of flying time per year. “The ‘Movie Memphis Belle’ operates in 42 to 48 cities each year and is part of our educational tour program,” he explained. Featuring a wing span of 103 feet, 9 inches and a fuel capacity of 1,700 gallons, the B-17 is capable of reaching speeds up to 300 mph. An Alcorn County Electric Power Association lineman is alert and recovering from injuries he stuffed during an electrocution while working on Wednesday in western Alcorn County. Due to the circumstances, ACE Power management felt uncomfortable about releasing the employee’s name. However, the Daily Corinthian has learned the accident victim’s name is Danny Lee. Alcorn County 911 received a report of an electrocution about 11:30 a.m. on County Road 654 just a short distance from Tippah County. The worker was in a bucket truck when electrocuted, and live lines remained present

as officials responded to the scene. “He’s in good spirits and is recovering from burns on both hands,” said Jason Grisham, operations manager at ACE Power. “All the employees at ACE have been praying for him and a quick, full recovery.” Following the accident, Lee was flown via Air Evac helicopter to The Regional Medical Center (MED) in Memphis where he remains in the hospital’s ICU Firefighters Burn Center. Grisham said accidents of this kind are uncommon. “Safety is our number one priority,” he said. “We have regular safety meetings, but it is a job that can involve danger.”

Teachers earn stipend for language training BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Seven Alcorn County educators recently received an A+ in language training. This week the Alcorn School District Board of Directors approved a stipend of $100 per teacher for those who participated in the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training held in July. “This training places an emphasis on grade-level reading skills for students in kindergarten-third grade,” said

Superintendent Gina Rogers Smith. “It includes training focused on developmentally appropriate and scientifically based early literacy skills for young children.” LETRS was created from the Literacy-Based Promotion Act passed in 2013 by Mississippi Legislatures. The training is a two-phase program in which teachers complete 20 hours of online coursework and successfully pass a cumulative assessment. Please see BOARD | 2A

Baseball booster club will build new facility BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

The Alcorn Central Golden Bears Baseball Booster Club is going to bat to improve the baseball facilities at Alcorn Central High School. The Alcorn School District Board of Directors voted this week to allow the booster club to begin work at the field, which will include one new structure planned for an indoor practice building. According to club members, the structure will be semi-enclosed with walls on two sides and a roof. The structure will not require an HVAC system or lighting. The 1,120 square foot building will feature artificial turf, a split batting cage area and an

indoor practice mound. Club members said the building will allow the team to remain consistent with other programs in the area and will benefit both the high school and junior high baseball programs. The completed project is expected to benefit 40-45 student athletes per school year and will be used during the program’s annual baseball camp fundraiser. “They hope to begin construction work in November,” said Superintendent Gina Rogers Smith. The new facility will cost an estimated $3,000 to complete, with all labor and materials funded by the booster club.
