SoCo District to get improvements BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The city of Corinth and Main Street Corinth are getting close to kicking off a series of improvements for the SoCo District. Plans for street improvements and a new pocket park are about to move forward.

The Board of Aldermen on Tuesday awarded a project to 3D Construction for concrete work on Wick Street at a cost of $39,850. Pittman Construction submitted a quote of $55,000. The concrete work will include the installation of bulb-outs with planters and ADA ramps, ADA

connections to existing sidewalks and additional parking alongside the pocket park. It appears 3D can get the Franklin Street intersection work completed in time for APAC to pave before the end of October, according to Street Commissioner Philip Verdung,

and the city would then ask APAC to pave from Fillmore Street to a point half-way between Franklin and Taylor. APAC would do the rest of the paving as its schedule permits. Main Street Director Taylor Coombs said her organization is ready to get the ball rolling on

the pocket park at the corner of Wick Street and Franklin Street to further enhance the thriving new section of downtown. The funds are in place, and she expects to see the green space come to life in the next few Please see SOCO | 2

Students looking to grow their leadership skills will get the opportunity with the upcoming Junior Leadership Alcorn. Presented by The Alliance, the leadership and community development program is open to sophomores and juniors who live in or attend school in Corinth and Alcorn County. “Junior Leadership Alcorn is a great way for students to explore our community,” said Community Development Director Andrea Rose. “We have different themes for each session this year, like industry, government and small business.” Students will hear from, interact with and be exposed to decision makers and leaders from around the region and state. “There will be a overnight stay at Crow’s Neck for a leadership development retreat, as well,” said Rose. “Students will take away a greater love for and Please see LEADERSHIP | 2

Mary Dell Dicks worked day and night. All to help the American Legion Post 6 Ladies Auxiliary. Dicks, a longtime quilter, has produced a multi-color quilt in which chances are being sold to help the organization raise money. “I was in awe when I saw it,” said Carlean Parker, president of the Ladies Auxiliary. “It is so beautiful and she wouldn’t even take a dime for doing it.” The full-size quilt consists of 19 different stars along with 20 small flags and one bigger flag. “I love to quilt and make things,” said Dicks. “Carlean gave me an idea of what she wanted and I went from there.” Dicks was eager to be part of the project since her deceased husband, Jimmy C. Dicks, was a veteran.

“I wanted to do the quilt since he served in Korea and Japan,” said Dicks. “The quilt has a lot of stitches, but it was easy.” Chances for the quilt are $1 or six chances for $5. The quilt will be given away on Veterans Day at the legion hall. “The winner doesn’t have to be present,” said Parker. Proceeds collected from the quilt will be used to fund the many programs sponsored by the American Legion such as Boys State, oratorical contest for high school students and other numerous programs of the organization. Chances are being sold every Friday night at the legion hall from 4-9 p.m. (For more information about purchasing a chance on the quilt contact Parker at 662462-3443.)
