10-4: Area police using new radios BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

City and county law enforcement are moving toward new radios that provide better communications locally and make it possible to communicate across the state. The radios operate on the Mississippi Wireless Integrated Network (MSWIN) using the

700 MHz range. The Corinth Police Department recently began using the new radios while also keeping the old ones in use for a while longer. “Coverage is a lot better for us in the city,” said Police Chief David Lancaster. “Before, we had a few places in the city that we could not talk from. With

“The chief and I can sit in my office with this walkie talkie and talk to them in Jackson, Mississippi, just like we’re talking here,” said Rinehart. “It’s amazing the distance that they have.” The development of MSWIN resulted from the Hurricane Katrina disaster, which showed the need for a way for agencies across the state to have seam-

these radios, we can.” The city obtained the radios with the assistance of grant funding. Sheriff Charles Rinehart told the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors this week that he wants to purchase the radios using drug seizure funds at an estimated cost of $34,000. He said the portables have an outstanding range.

Knights of Columbus raise funds for Timber Hills BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The cost is no more than a few coins. The result could be positive change in a person’s life. The local Knights of Columbus chapter is asking the community to help them support Region IV Mental Health Services with the annual candy drive, which helps Timber Hills provide transportation for its clients. “We are the only mental health center in the state that provides wall-to-wall free transportation services to our clients,” said Charlie Spearman, executive director for

The Boys & Girls Club will host its 14th Annual afterschool program celebration on Oct. 17. “We will be one of more than 8,000 sites across the nation sending the message that after-school is key to children’s success, and that we must keep the lights on and the doors open after school,” Club Director Christy Grice said. Parents, media, employers, neighbors, school officials, including others, have been invited to help the program rally support for safe, stimulating after-school programs. “We would like for you to be a part of our local celebration,” said Grice. Thursday’s event is set for 6 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club, 511 Clark Street, Corinth, and the program will include a balloon launch followed by a reception honoring three Local Afterschool Ambassadors. As After-school Ambassadors, the persons being recognized bring great energy to the work of building stronger support for after-school programs among parents, businesses and community leaders, lawmakers, and others, according to Grice. CARE set to unveil cannon BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The new Parrott rifle at the Corinth depot will get a formal dedication on Tuesday. The CARE Foundation encourages the public to attend the ceremony at 5 p.m. at the CARE Honor Garden, 215 North Fillmore Street, to learn more about the artifact’s history. Chief Park Ranger Stacy Allen is scheduled to speak about the 30-pound parrot siege gun and carriage. “We will not only unveil the cannon but also honor the endowment fund donors,” said Mona Lisa Grady, executive director for CARE. “We hope everybody can

join us.” The authentic rifle is mounted on a reproduction carriage and positioned alongside the railroad between the museum and tourism office. CARE acquired the carriage to house the rifle, which had been at Shiloh since 1901. CARE worked with the National Park Service to bring the artifact to the depot grounds. The Parrott rifle has a maximum range of 6,700 yards or 3.8 miles, using a 3.75-pound charge to fire the 30-pound projectile. “On May 29, 1862, during the Siege of Corinth, General John Pope ordered three
