Homecoming traditions continue IRS scam targets region

KOSSUTH — Much like other schools across Alcorn County, homecoming week traditions are alive and well in Aggie land. Each October, residents of the rural farming community turn their focus to the many homecoming activities planned throughout the week at Kossuth High School. “It’s just something we do,” said Rhonda Moon, whose daughter Abby Gray is a senior at KHS. “In this area, there is never a shortage of support when it comes to anything Kossuth Aggies.” Moon said her daughter was very excited about Friday’s homecoming parade. “Abby is the senior maid in the homecoming court, so we’ve been busy decorating the vehicle she will ride in during the parade,” said Moon. “Doing stuff like this really shows our love and support for our kids and for our school.” Moon recruited help from Abby’s grandmother, Mary Hall, and family friends Martha Ray, Lavada Rory and Clarareece Taylor to decorate Abby’s parade ride.

A new scam has recently threatened Crossroads area residents. Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley said consumers should be aware of a serious telephone scam that appears to be from the Internal Revenue Service. The same scam has collected more than $20 million from nearly 4,000 victims since October 2013. The same scammers are now targeting locals, according to Presley. Autumn is in the air and “mum” is the word. Crossroads area residents have begun searching for those perfect pumpkins and mums to add a little color to their front porch. A new shipment of fall’s quintessential flowers known as Chrysanthemums, nicknamed mum, arrived late last week at All Seasons Nursery & Garden Center in Corinth. “Our mums arrived with little to no color,” said Myra Willis, nursery manager. “Most people want to decorate around Halloween and they like their mums to last until Thanksgiving.” Often available in an array of colors, shapes and sizes, All Seasons will offer two sizes this year in five colors, including yellow, red, bronze, white and purple.
