Candy drive benefits mental health agency Local Knights ask community’s help in fundraiser BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

It costs no more than a little pocket change, and the result could be a better life for a local resident. The local Knights of Columbus chapter is making a plea for the community’s help in the annual candy fundraiser in support of transportation for clients of Region IV Mental Health Services. Those soliciting donations will be at Gardner’s, Roger’s, Kroger, Walmart and the intersection of Fulton Drive and Harper Road on Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We serve so many people that don’t have adequate trans-

portation and couldn’t come in,” said Charlie Spearman, executive director for Region IV. “It’s always been our philosophy that people out in the county need our services as bad as people living next door to the courthouse.” Since the candy drive began in 1986, it has helped secure an estimated 50 vans for Region IV. “We are the only mental health center in the state that provides wall-to-wall transportation services,” said Spearman. “Somebody that lives out in Rienzi and they want to come to our day program, we guarantee them free transportation. We would not be able to do it without the Knights’ help.” The event is for a good cause and a lot of fun, said Grand Knight Larry Gann. “It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community and let people know what we’re about,” he said.

Just as “Shadows of the Past,” the story is set in Logan Point, Miss. “The book is about forgiveness and was an easy one to write,” said the author. In the book, acting sheriff Ben Logan hasn’t heard from Leigh Somerall in a very long time. The two were once

A Rienzi man has been charged with driving under the influence in connection with a crash last Thursday near Glen. Leon Voyles, 46, of Rienzi, was southbound on County Road 300 in a 1995 Hyundai when he failed to stop as he attempted to cross U.S. Highway 72 and collided with a 2000 Nissan Maxima driven by Tommy Odom, 62, of Burnsville, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop Public Affairs Officer Trooper Ray Hall. Troopers responded to the crash around 7 p.m. last Thursday. Voyles was charged with DUI. He was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Odom was transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center with minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the highway patrol.
