Town Hall Meeting Speaker of the House on the listening end as citizens air concerns on various topics BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

A crowd of citizens aired concerns about topics such as Common Core education standards, gun rights and health in a town hall forum Tuesday afternoon with Mississippi Speaker of the House Philip Gunn. Corinth City Hall was one of three stops Tuesday on Gunn’s

Mississippi Solutions tour. All of the local legislative delegation attended to hear what’s on the minds of local citizens. Several people were fired up about actions taken by some cities since the passage of House Bill 2 regarding open carry of guns. “One thing we have to address is all these municipalities

across the state that are passing unlawful gun bans against state law,” said Jay Anthony, one of the organizers of the recent House Bill 2 rallies. “Something needs to be done to stop this. You can’t carry carry a gun in one town; you can carry a gun in another town; and it’s just Please see GUNN | 2A

Summitt scheduled Tuesday at Arena

The corner of Fillmore and Cruise Street was filled with supporters and volunteers to help support this year’s Eighth Annual Catfish and Khakis. Northeast Mississippi’s Boys & Girls Club hosted the annual fall fundraiser and they had plenty of hungry folks from around the community to stop by and enjoy the food and fellowship. Local supporters Kim Scott and Amy Marlar of Corinth said that they were proud to come down and be a part of such a great cause. “We do this every year to help support the Boys & Girls Club,” Scott said. “This is a great opportunity to enjoy some good food at a great price, and we know that it will be a monetary blessing for Catfish and Khakis.” Marlar said that their boss from Farm Bureau, Dan Crozier, paid for their to-go-plates today, and she was also glad to be involved with this event. “It just shows that people in the community care,” Marlar added. “Not only us and our company but almost all the

Local angler helps MSU win Bass Cup BY JOSEPH MILLER jmiller@dailycorinthian.com

Mississippi State University’s bass club won the inaugural Mississippi Collegiate Bass Cup competition on Sept. 28 at the Providence Hill Farm in Jackson. Providence Hill Farm’s featured lake is located in Jackson and has 150 acres with a partially surrounding sea wall and is stocked with F1 bass weighing up to 12 pounds. Participating teams that competed against Mississippi State at the farm included Ole Miss,

Southern Mississippi University and Mississippi College, all of which sent two teams each to fish off against one another in this tournament. However, there was only one winner of this year’s Governor’s Cup, and the members of the Bulldog team were able to bring home the crown. Those team members consisted of anglers Josh Cameron, Joe Marty, Justin Atkins and Lowell Gann of Corinth. These teams of anglers battled for the trophy from 6:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. but, in the end

it was Mississippi State’s bass club who came out on top. Gann said it was a long, stressful day, but he was proud of his teams performance. “After having such a hard year this year and coming up short some, this win felt really good,” Gann said. “It was so amazing to be there at Mississippi College and to win on their home lake where they are used to fishing and stuff. It was really cool to win and it was kind of overwhelming.”
