Police seize $9,000, drugs and vehicles BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Police Chief Ralph Dance praised his narcotics officers Wednesday morning for helping bust a known drug house in Corinth. Officers took five individuals into custody and seized $9,000 in cash and a large amount of various narcotics during the late Tuesday night bust. Many items were confiscated, including two vehicles. “This was one of the larger busts we have had in several years,” said Dance. “It’s pretty exciting to know that we have helped remove such a large amount of drugs off the streets of Corinth.” Dance said officers were watching the

1508 Tate Street address when a female left the home. A traffic violation would result in a traffic stop where officers seized 19 ounces of marijuana in individual bags and around $5,000 in cash. “The female was traveling at a high rate of speed,” added Dance. “She was stopped by officers at the corner of Cemetery and Horton Streets around 8:20 p.m.” Within two hours, PD and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics executed a search warrant on the Tate Street property. “Several individuals tried to flee out the front door as officers entered the residence,” said Dance. “Another individual Please see ARREST | 2

Several bulldozers moved about the new industrial park property Wednesday, removing trees and debris.

IUKA — A Alcorn County man is being held in Tishomingo County Jail for making a threat toward a school earlier this week. According to authorities, Japheth Wilson, 19, of County Road 312 in Corinth, remains in custody of the Tishomingo County Sheriff’s office while charges are pending. Tishomingo County Investigator Adam Hall said both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation were contacted to determine what charges may be placed on the suspect. Wilson was taken into custody at Dollar General on U.S. Highway 72 West in Corinth on Tuesday.

No weapon was found on Wilson. Around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, Tishomingo deputies informed the Tishomingo County School District of threats that had been made toward a school. Law enforcement said a man might be headed to a school in Tishomingo County with a weapon. “We received word of a possible threat in regard to one of our schools,” said Tishomingo County School District Superintendent Christie Holly. “The authorities were unsure which campus, so to be safe we decided to put a lockdown on all campuses.” All schools remained on lockdown until after the suspect had been taken into custody.

Work continues on rail hub City hires 2 prosecutors BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Pastoral land off Barnstable Road and the Kimberly Clark Parkway is undergoing a transformation that local leaders hope will translate into jobs. For the last few weeks, heavy equipment has been removing trees from 40 of the 135 acres of the south site of the Northeast Mississippi Rail Hub as part of a project funded by a $225,000 TVA grant. The work also includes a 2,200-foot access road, grubbing of 35 acres and a topographical study of the industrial park site. “It looks like a completely different place than what it looked like even four weeks ago,” said Alliance President Gary Chandler as elected officials and

Lowell Hinton Board of Supervisors president community leaders gathered Wednesday morning to view the progress. The phase one site preparation will help give prospects a better view of the land, which boasts dual rail access and is just off Highway 72 with ample water and electrical capacity. The north and south parcels together encompass 417 acres. The Alliance’s purchase of the

land followed talks at the end of 2012 with TVA, the Mississippi Development Authority and local elected officials on the direction Corinth and Alcorn County should take with industrial recruitment efforts. “We knew that we were a little shorthanded on industrial real estate, whether that be exPlease see SITE | 2

The Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen hired two attorneys to take on the duties of city prosecutor. Thomas L. Sweat Jr. recently resigned from the post, and the city had five candidates under consideration for the prosecutor’s duties in municipal court. The board interviewed candidates Tuesday afternoon and made the hires in a closed session after Tuesday’s regular meeting. The new city prosecutors are John O. Windsor and Robert G. Moore Jr. Windsor, in private practice in the city since 2008, is a former special assistant attorney general and senior at-

torney and hearing officer for the Mississippi Department of Corrections. He also previously worked with the AG’s cyber crimes division. Moore has served as the elected county prosecuting attorney since August 2011, with duties involving justice court, youth court, chancery court lunacy hearings and appeals. He has also had a solo practice since 2011. Moore previously worked with a Jackson law firm handling civil matters and the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation as a legal advocacy coordinator. The hires were made in a split vote of 4-3, with some disagreement on the hiring of two individuals.
