Voter registration concludes today BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

It’s a busy weekend for local events, but some civic duty can also be done. The Alcorn County Circuit Clerk’s Office will open today

from 8 a.m. until noon for the voter registration deadline for the upcoming general election, and Corinth City Hall will also open today until noon for absentee voting in the city general election.

County circuit clerks’ offices across the state will be open for the voter registration deadline for the Nov. 4 general election, which locally includes three contested races and a ballot initiative for a constitutional

amendment that would establish hunting and fishing as a constitutional right. The general election is stirring little interest in voter registration and a fairly small number of absentee votes since

Effort collects coloring books for St. Jude BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

A local family is out to make the lives of youngsters at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital a little colorful. Nine year-old Lane Bryant and his family have started the “Color a Child’s World” drive to collect crayons and coloring books for the children of the Memphis, Tennessee, hospital. “Lane wants to do something every year on his birthday to help children in the hospital,” said his mother Jamie.

Lane spent a week at St. Jude following spine surgery in 2011. Diagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy called spastic quadriplegia at the age of three, Lane has gone through 11 surgeries. Bryant, son of James and Jamie Bryant, will celebrate his 10th birthday Nov. 8. “He loves helping other children,” said Jamie. “Lane just wants to do what other children can do.” Those interested in donating to the drive can drop off coloring books and crayons at Village

Outlet at 120 Fillmore Street. “People have really been generous,” said Jamie. “Some have gave up to 10 books at a time.” The drive continues through the month of October. Everything collected will be taken to St. Jude on Nov. 1. “Watching his interaction with those kids is all the thanks we want,” said Jamie. “He just loves kids.” (For more information about the “Color a Child’s World” drive call Jamie Bryant at 662286-9910.)
