Dry conditions increase wildfire potential BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

With dry conditions taking hold, officials are discouraging burning leaves or anything else outdoors until the area gets some rainfall.

Corinth had a large grass fire Wednesday afternoon, and the potential may increase as more days go by without rainfall and the humidity level decreases with the fall season. The weather forecast holds little prom-

ise of relief, with only a slim 20 percent chance of rainfall posted for Wednesday night and Thursday by the National Weather Service Memphis

“Wildfires can start with just a spark and spread quickly to endanger forestland, personal property and lives.” State Forester Charlie Morgan

People of the Crossroads Sherra Potts, Corinth

“ ... we feel this year will hold some really fun events and projects which will help the community stay involved in the lives of the children of Alcorn County.”

Staff photo by Zack Steen

A longtime Alcorn School District teacher, Sherra Potts retired from education in 2010 after 33 years of dedication at Alcorn Central and Alcorn Career-Technology Center. Now with more free time, the 60-year-old finds herself attending car shows with her babies – two 1930 Ford Model-As. “They were my mother and daddy’s,” she said. One of the two classic cars was on display at the Green Market on Saturday. “I’m using it as decoration,” she said. Sherra and her husband, Curtis, could both be found along Fillmore Street helping their son, Jesse, sell the thousands of pumpkins the young farmer grew on the family farm. Sherra also has one daughter, Tana, and three grandchildren.
