Heritage area to help tourism BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Corinth has some stories to tell. Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area wants to play a part in sharing them. Hills Project Manager Bobby King met with the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau board Wednesday to discuss avenues available through its grant program. “Our primary focus is luring people out to tell the stories in Mississippi,” said King. “Today’s Mississippi isn’t perfect, but it still has some good stories to tell.” MHNHA, designated by Con-

gress in March of 2009, is one of only 49 National Heritage Areas in the United States and works to preserve, interpret and promote the rich history and heritage of the hills region. The heritage area covers 19 full counties in northeast Mississippi as well as portions of 11 additional counties. “People come when they read about the Hills,” said King, a Corinth native. “Corinth has a great story and a good group of people.” Community grants are available to member counties in the organization. The Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau’s action produced an award. The tourism office received one of six Research-in-Action awards presented at the 27th Annual Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Vicksburg on Tuesday. “I was really excited,” said tourism director Christy Burns. “In tourism it all starts with research and numbers.” CACVB was honored for its partnership with Mississippi State University Carl Small Town Center and Smith Travel Research. The project with MSU was a feasibility study for a 49-room boutique hotel downtown. Smith Travel Research worked with the tourism office during the World Slugburger Eating Championship. Testing their knowledge and skills, 21 students from the Corinth School District Robotics team will compete in the Mississippi Best Robotics competition Saturday at Mississippi State University. “This is our fifth year to offer robotics,” said CHS teacher Darla Nash. “Each year, we are given a kit from Mississippi State which contains $1,200 worth of materials. We purchase the extra such as aluminum cans, duct tape and other items needed to complete our project.” Nash and Corinth Middle School instructor Beverly Henson are team sponsors.

The robotics team consists of Corinth middle and high school students in grades 8–12. Caterpillar, Kimberly Clark, Keytronics and others serve as mentors. Not knowing what their project is until kick-off, the students have just six weeks to complete their project. “It takes a lot of brainstorming and trial and error,” said Nash. “The students will complete drawings prior to deciding the simplest and most efficient way to get the job done.” In addition to completing their project, the class will have to follow and presPlease see ROBOTICS | 2A

Weekend’s Green Market going orange for fall Arts Council plans BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Cooler weather, falling leaves and thousands of locally grown pumpkins overflowing into Fillmore Street. It’s October Green Market time, and according to organizers this weekend’s market is on tap to be one of the biggest. “We have lots of new and returning vendors offering some very unique creations perfect for Halloween and autumn,” said Cathy Wood, Green Market committee member. “We will even have some vendors who will also have handmade Christmas themed items available.”

Set for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Corinth Depot and Crossroads Museum at 221 North Fillmore, the event is expected to draw a wide range of vendors. The Potts family is among the 50-60 vendors expected on Saturday. Led by young farmer Jesse Potts, the family will offer up more than 20 different varieties of pumpkins and gourds. “The Potts plan on bringing several trailer loads of pumpkins,” said Wood. “They will have a couple of trailers Staff photo by Zack Steen parked on Fillmore Street in Young farmer Jesse Potts and his family will offer front of the CARE Garden en- up more than 20 varieties of pumpkins and gourds at Saturday’s Green Market set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please see MARKET | 2A at the Corinth Depot.

Haunted Theatre BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Area Arts Council invites all ghosts, goblins and ghouls to audition for a very spooky occasion. “We’ve decided it is time for this community to learn the secrets confined within the walls of the historic Coliseum Civic Center,” said CAAC Committee Member Myra Byrnes. “Halloween is the best time for this, since that is when all the paranormal theatre spirits let themselves be known.” The doors of the coliseum will open on Thursday, Oct. 22–Saturday, Oct. 24, and again on Thursday, Oct. 29–Saturday, Oct. 31 as the council presents their first ever Haunted Theatre.
