Man indicted on fondling charges BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Alcorn County Grand Jury recently returned an in-

dictment on fondling charges against a Corinth man. Billy Ray Prather, 58, of Burns Road, was arrested on

Sept. 14 when the indictment was served. He is out on bond. Corinth Police Capt. Dell Green said the complaint was

made June 25 by a 17-year-old individual who accused Prather of inappropriate touching during a period of three years.

The case was presented to the next session of the grand jury in mid-August, resulting in a twocount indictment for fondling.

Crossroads Regional Park picked up honors for its expansion and new soccer program at the annual convention of the Mississippi Recreation & Park Association. Presented last week in Biloxi, the awards are the first for Corinth-Alcorn Parks and Recreation to be earned from the MRPA. The honors are in the highest population class for population of 35,000 or more, putting the park up against larger municipal parks. “The character that these awards have gives your department, your city, the recognition that they are moving in the right direction by offering things,” said Park Director Ray Holloway, who was excited to bring home two plaques. “This will help the complex go far.” It’s another step toward attracting tournament play, he said. The park received the Hayward “Bo” Phillips design award of merit for the expan-

The proposed “council of governments” is still in development. Chancery Clerk Greg Younger had considered an Oct. 1 first meeting, but it will be at a later date. The last few weeks have not allowed time for the planning it deserves, he said, and he hopes to see some of the municipal leaders get involved in the planning and preparation. The council would have no legal authority, but Younger believes it would be a great networking opportunity for leaders of the county and its municipalities. In addition to the elected leaders of the county and Corinth, Farmington, Rienzi, Glen and Kossuth, the meeting would likely include both the city and county school boards and superintendents, the local legislators, Magnolia Regional Health Center, ACE Power, Corinth Gas & Water and the rural water associations. Students visit history at camp BY BOBBY J. SMITH bsmith@dailycorinthian.com

Some local middle school students are getting a chance to walk in the footsteps of history this week at the Corinth Contraband camp. The educational activities are presented by a partnership between LINK and the National Park Service. “We are excited to continue our partnership with LINK

Corinth-Alcorn County to present education programs at the Contraband Camp for the city and county 5th grade students,” said NPS Supervisory Park Ranger Ashley Berry. “The National Park Service staff worked very hard to develop experiential learning activities for the students. Students were able to interact with the Rangers and participate in activities similar to

the daily life tasks of the men, women and children living at the camp in 1862 to 1864.” The students learned about different aspects of life for the newly freed slaves at the Contraband Camp by participating in different ranger-led activities at four stations which correspond with the statues Please see CAMP | 6

Corinth battlefield to commemorate anniversary Shiloh National Military Park will commemorate the 154th anniversary of the battle of Corinth by offering interpretive programs over a three day period from Monday, Oct. 3, through Wednesday, Oct. 5. “We invite everyone to visit the Corinth Battlefield as we remember the events that took place in Corinth 154 years ago,” said Superintendent Dale Wilkerson. “The programs will provide visitors with a unique

opportunity to engage park resources that are normally challenging to access on a daily basis.” Visitors will also have the opportunity to discover unique stories about the battle such as the story of an eagle named “Old Abe,” the mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry, who became one of the casualties of the battle. Rangers will offer battlefield hikes, multimedia presentations, and car caravan

tours over the three days. In addition, a Junior Ranger table will be set up especially for the younger visitors. The Junior Ranger table will be available Sunday, Oct. 2, through Wednesday, Oct. 5. Children are invited to visit the Center and participate in the Junior Ranger program which includes the special Centennial Junior Ranger Activity Book. (A complete schedule of hikes and car caravan tours is

posted on the park website at www.nps.gov/shil or find us on Facebook.) Schedule of Events:
