Jacinto readies next round of projects BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

With renovation work in progress, the Jacinto Foundation is seeking approval from the Mississippi Department and Archives and History to move forward on five addition-

al projects at the courthouse property. Executive Director Beth Whitehurst also expects to make a presentation to the Prentiss County Board of Supervisors on Monday as part of the foundation’s effort to

spur renewed financial support from the other two counties that, with Alcorn, made up the original territory of Tishomingo County. The foundation submitted a request for $5,000 to both Prentiss and Tishomingo counties.

Work is in progress to repair damage that resulted from a failed support beam in a window of the northwest room, allowing masonry above the window to move out of position. Work is about to begin on floor stabilization.

The latest renovations have uncovered a surprise. “For 40-plus years we have believed that the walls of the Jacinto Courthouse were made of solid brick,” said Whitehurst. Please see JACINTO | 2

Paint party will benefit leukemia patient BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Gracie Mae Bain is bringing the area together. The community will have a chance to help the 5 year-old, who was diagnosed with leukemia in August, by taking part in a paint party on Saturday. “Painting for Grace” is set for 9:30 a.m. in the Tate Baptist Church fellowship hall. Cost to paint a 16-by-20 canvas design is $40 per person or $70 for

two. “It’s time for all of us to come together for this little girl,” said Alcorn Central Elementary School teacher Helen Gillentine, who is helping spread the word about the event. “We want people to make plans to be here and to bring their friends.” The paint instructor is Emily Crabb of Ramer, Tenn. “It is amazing how people are so caring to do something for a 5 year-old,” said Jessica Bain, the mother of Gra-

cie. “The outpour of love from people has been awesome.” Gracie, the daughter of Kyle and Jessica Bain, was found to have leukemia in her bone marrow on Aug. 18. The kindergarten student underwent her first chemotherapy treatment three days later on Aug. 21 at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. “Being five is more of a blessing than a curse,” said Jessica. “She has been Please see GRACIE | 6
