$100 bill gets a makeover BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The $100 bill is getting a makeover for notes that will begin to enter circulation in less than two weeks. As with other redesigned bills, the new $100 note features added security features intended to deter counterfeiting. Distribution of the bills will begin Oct. 8, but it may take some time for a person to see one in circulation. “We’ve built up large inventories of redesigned $100 notes in Federal Reserve Bank vaults

is influenced by distance, demand and the policies of individual financial institutions.” The new security features include a blue ribbon on the front that is woven into the paper. The ribbon contains images that shift from bells to 100s as the bill is tilted back and forth. The other new feature is a color-shifting bell inside a copper inkwell on the front. The note also retains three security features from the old $100 — the portrait watermark, security

The path to a new or better job often begins in front of a computer screen. People who do not have access to a computer or are not comfortable with computers can get some help at the Northeast Mississippi Business Incubation System’s Tech-Connect computer lab, which offers the public an opportunity to create a resume, fill out job applications on-line and participate in classes to improve computer skills. The lab has been around since 2001 as part of NEMBIS’ goal of helping people. “We want to remind the public this is an economic tool available to them when they are trying to update their skills sets, whether it be in the labor market or educationally,” said Executive Director Ray McClel-

Alcorn County’s Crossroads Museum teamed up with the Alcorn County Fair to host the museum’s Twelfth Annual Photo Contest in 2013 and the winners have been announced. These photos were displayed between Sept. 17-21 at the fair and the contest was open to all ages, but professional photographers were not allowed to participate. The photos are now on display at the Crossroads Museum through Nov. 16. The museum will host a reception for the exhibit on Oct. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. There were seven categories of entry that included architectural landscape (photos had to include a man-made structure),

Longtime school employee enjoys retirement BY JOSEPH MILLER jmiller@dailycorinthian.com

When it comes to hard work and dedication, one person in particular knows the exact meaning of those words after putting in almost half a century of service with a local school system. Ann Driver of Corinth worked for the Alcorn School District for 48 years before finally retiring the last school year. “I got started at Glendale my first year of teaching,” Driver said. “Basically, how I got started there was the fact I needed a job and I was going to college so I started there in 1962. I started off as just an assistant where I just

helped the teachers that were working at that time.” Driver helped with the first grade classes at Glendale for about a year before moving to what she called, “Old Farmington.” “They were combining the schools back then, in 1963 I believe, while the Alcorn Central schools were being built,” Driver explained. “We actually did half days at the two schools while we were waiting on the new elementary school to be completed. I decided to stay at the new school once it was complete instead of going back to the Old Farmington school house.”

Driver spent 47 years of her tenure at Alcorn Central Elementary School (ACES) and she said — while holding back her tears — she stayed there for that long because she really enjoyed her co-workers and her students. “I loved the children and I loved being with the children and the teachers, too. They were all wonderful and I don’t regret it one bit,” added Driver. “But after all the years and hard work, I knew it was time for me to step away.” When asked what really made her finally decide to end her
