Police monitor traffic near buses BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Police Department is keeping an eye on traffic around school buses after several reports of motorists failing to yield when buses are loading or unloading students. “We want to encourage every-

body to be safe and use caution around our kids,” said Chief Ralph Dance. “We are monitoring the traffic and will be issuing citations.” Cass Street is one of the locations where failure to yield has been observed. “Cass Street is a four-lane,

but you still are required to stop and not go around the bus,” said Dance. It has also happened in the middle school area. “If the bus driver gets the tag number and a description of the vehicle, they can sign an affidavit and have a warrant issued for the driver,” said Dance.

“That has been done in the past and is being done now.” Also, speeding fines are increased in school zones. The city is also continuing to make an effort to encourage people to park legally when parallel parking downtown. A number of complaints have sur-

faced recently in situations with cars parked against the flow of traffic. Mayor Tommy Irwin said a number of residents have expressed concern about safety issues caused by illegal parking. Parking issues have followed the increase in activity downtown, the chief said.

Due to demand, Corinth is reopening the sale of its old green trash carts. They can be purchased beginning Thursday and will be available for about a week. The cost is $10, and the procedure will be the same as before — visit the tax office at City Hall to pay for the cart and then take the

receipt to the street department on West Shiloh Road to pick up the cart between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. An individual can buy up to 45 carts. When the containers first went on sale Aug. 3, the city sold 600 of them within the first two hours as trucks lined Please see CARTS | 6A

Print raises funds for poetry project BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Capturing pictures with words, artist Jaylene Whitehurst is offering a special limited edition print of her popular “Liftoff: Bird’s Eye View” painting as the Crossroads Poetry Project celebrates its eighth season. “I think the work the poetry project is doing is very important work and I was looking for a way to support it,” said White-

hurst. “So, I approached the project’s president Autry Davis with the idea of doing a special print and combining it with poetry which would be sold with part of the proceeds going to the project. He was enthusiastic about it and we decided it was a win for everyone.” “In keeping with the theme of capturing pictures with words, I was looking for an image people would respond to and instantly thought of my bird painting. It

has a lot of texture to it and is something people seem to be drawn to.” A mixed medium art-piece, the painting was created from acrylic paint, gel, glitter, tissue paper and real feathers. Please see PRINT | 6A Staff photo by Kimberly Shelton

Earthquake mania grips the region as people begin preparing for a possible trembler. Scientist Iben Browning’s bogus prediction of a major earthquake to strike the New Madrid Fault by December creates fears and causes many to begin preparing for disaster.

The Alcorn Welcome Center launches the Avenue of Magnolias in partnership with Keep Corinth Beautiful. Welcome Center Director Mary Lee Hutchens says the project offers the opportunity to honor loved ones while beautifying the visitors center.
