Alcorn Central Spirit Homecoming week means five days of fun. It has been that and much more at Alcorn Central High School this week. Senior Will Shadburn (left) and Luke Price took part in Character/ College Day on Tuesday as the Bears get ready to celebrate homecoming on Friday. Shaburn showed he has plenty of heart while dressing up as the Tin Man while Price decided to go with old favorite Mickey Mouse. The Alcorn Central High School Football Festival and Talent Show will be held tonight outside the Weight Room beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the ACHS Talent Show followed by the presentation of the Homecoming Court during the Community-wide Pep Rally. The festival will conclude with the lighting of the Bonfire and the burning of the Royals. Bring a lawn chair and come out to support the team and school.
Members of the Corinth Democratic Executive Committee put their signatures on the official Democratic primary results Wednesday as attention turns to October’s general election ballot. After waiting five days in accordance with the new voter ID law, the committee added more than 30 affidavit ballots to last week’s machine and absentee vote totals. The primary had seven residents who did not bring valid identification when they voted. They were allowed to vote by affidavit and, of those, two returned later with valid ID and had their votes counted. With the remaining affidavits, Deputy Circuit Clerk Crystal Starling checked each voter’s information against the Statewide Elections Management System and then handed it over to the committee members to consider whether to accept or reject. For police chief, Ben Gann led the affidavits 21-13 for a final certified total of 1,265 (52 percent) for Ralph Dance and
1,156 for Gann. For alderman at large, Jennifer S. McCoy received 17 votes from the affidavit ballots, and incumbent Mike Hopkins received 15. The certified total is 1,469 (63 percent) for Hopkins and 866 for McCoy. Ward 4 incumbent J.C. Hill led the affidavits 7-3, giving him a certified total of 333 (55 percent) to Steve Hill’s 269. City Clerk Vickie Roach said absentee ballots for the Oct. 14 municipal general election are expected to become available either Friday or Monday. City Hall will open Saturday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. to noon for absentee voting. The election will again be held in the fire truck bays on the west side of City Hall. Voters and poll workers seemed to like the location, she said. “To me, it flowed much better,” said Roach. The October ballot will have only two contested races — police chief and alderman at large — while candidates for the other offices will be unopposed.
Shirts honor soccer player BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Austin Digby had the heart of a warrior. Owen B. Whitehurst Memorial Golf Tournament founder Mike Whitehurst was looking for a way to honor the former Corinth High School soccer player. Whitehurst used proceeds from a bag toss during the 14th edition of the golf tournament along with other money raised during the event to have around 75 T-shirts made for the Warriors and Lady Warriors soccer teams. “This is a great way to honor Austin,” said Warrior Head Coach Gregg Parker as he and Lady Warriors mentor Cameron Glenn passed out shirts to players. “He did everything ever asked of him for the soccer program.” Digby died just 10 days fol-
lowing a tragic accident on Aug. 3 in the Oakland Baptist Church parking lot. “We were thinking of a way to contribute to the memory of Austin when the T-shirt idea came up,” said Whitehurst. “We thought this would be a positive way to honor him.” Around $150 from a bag toss during the tournament was collected from golfers who wanted to take a stroke off their score. Organizers also used proceeds from the overall event for the shirts. The shirts – designed by Whitehurst’s wife, Tracy, at Winner’s Circle – feature a soccer player with a Superman S on his chest kicking a soccer ball on the back. “Heart of a Warrior – In Memory of Austin Digby” is also part of the white shirt. CHS kicks off the soccer campaign in November.
