Alliance raising funds for land purchase BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The Alliance is asking the community to help support its new land purchase. With six banks backing the land purchase, The Alliance will be raising funds to pay for the purchase of 417 acres. “The industrial land fund drive is as important as anything we do at The Alliance, especially considering our most recent endeavor with the purchase of the
new property east of Corinth,” said Alliance President Gary Chandler. “We believe this new property will allow us to better compete for manufacturers looking to locate in our region,” The Alliance explains in a letter going out to community members. “This site offers many of the characteristics today’s manufacturers demand: easy rail access, four-lane highway access and ready access to utilities.”
Past fund drives have made it possible to acquire property for successful projects such as FedEx, Masterpiece Engineering, Corinthian Furniture, Young and Daughter, and First Industrial Realty’s 294,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center for Kimberly Clark. The Alliance also purchased the 75-acre Highway 45 site with funds from the land fund drive. That site has generated attention from site selection consultants
and companies both domestic and abroad, according to The Alliance. The Alliance is asking companies to consider a three-year contribution to the drive. The money is used only for the acquisition and development of industrial property in Alcorn County. With this larger parcel of land, the Economic Development Council hopes to bring bigger industrial prospects into play for Alcorn County. The property
could accommodate one or several industries and has frontage on U.S. Highway 72 along with ample water, natural gas and electrical capacity. “This new property is a gamechanger for our community,” said Chandler. “We are very excited about the potential for growth that this new property provides our future generations.” For more information, contact The Alliance at 287-5269.
Large crowd attends library’s huge book sale BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com
Old books got new lives and the changing of hands left room for new additions Saturday as the Friends of the Corinth Library hosted a huge book sale to benefit the library. A large crowd filled the garage space on the west end of the library building to dig through a huge selection of books and other materials offered for sale at bargain prices. Northeast Mississippi Regional Library System Director William McMullin said the hard work of the Friends group has a huge impact on building the library’s collections. “The funds brought in through the book sale allow us to purchase items we wouldn’t be able to otherwise. It lets us deepen our collection,” he said. The books being sold Saturday were a combination of donations from the public as well as discarded items taken out of circulation at the library.
McMullin said clearing away those items makes room for the library to add new material and being able to do so through the sale gives them new value. He said it’s also a great feeling to know those items will continue to be read and used. He noted Saturday’s sale was the first big sale event in approximately six years. While the library has an ongoing sale inside the big events bring in a large crowd and can make a significant impact in a single day. The willingness of the Friends of the Library volunteers to give of their time and resources to help them serve the community means a great deal, and the library truly appreciates all the hard work the group does, McMullin said. He said he’s especially grateful to Friends members Jean Jordan and Lola Porter and their husbands who worked for many weeks to organize the books and prepare for Saturday’s sale.
