Friday night’s rainfall put local creeks to the test with one of the bigger 24-hour totals on record for the city. Drainage commissioner Milton Sandy Jr. said he was very surprised to find more than 6 inches of rainfall in the gauge at his office Saturday morning. “This places it in the record for one of the top 10 24-hour rainfall events in the last 111 years,” he said. Corinthweather.net, which has a gauge on North Madison Street, recorded 4.97 inches on Friday and 0.95 inches on Saturday, for a total of 5.92 inches for the duration of the event. That’s more than fell on May 2, 2010, the date of major flooding in the city. That day saw 5.68 inches. There are notable differences in the scenarios — May 1, 2010, also had significant rainfall, while the Corinth area has recently been experiencing a dry spell. “People have asked me over the years whether I really believed cleaning out the canals would help prevent flooding,” said Sandy. “We have had relatively few significant rainfall events to test the theory since May 2, 2010, but Friday night was certainly one of them. Not only was it a significant volume but also pretty intense over a relatively short period of time from 8 to 12 Friday night and then until 3 or 4 in the morning. There is no question in my mind that if nothing had been done, we would have

Officials look to purchase as possible game changer BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Local officials hope to provide an economic game changer with Monday’s purchase of 417 acres of land for marketing to industry. It is envisioned as a new industrial park setting that offers ample rail access while putting a larger parcel of land into the portfolio, potentially opening

the door to bigger projects. The Alliance’s land purchase, backed by six local banks, closed Monday on the property which has frontage on U.S. Highway 72 and is near the Kimberly Clark Parkway. Officials gathered in a field off Barnstable Road to make the announcement. “About a year ago, we began at The Alliance to look and

see what we could do to really improve Corinth’s chance of landing industrial prospects,” said Reece Terry, chairman of the Economic Development Council. “One thing that came to light virtually every time we talked to professional developers and successful communities was that we needed more product — that product being in large-

The Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen is trying to keep the South, East and West Corinth school properties out of the city’s hands. In a special meeting Mon-

day, the board voted to seek an attorney general’s opinion on whether the city can relinquish the reverter clause which has come to light as the Easom Outreach Foundation attempts to take over the South Corinth campus. The

reverter clause in the deed of each school states that when the property stops being used as a school, it returns to city ownership. The board also voted to undo a motion it made in a recent meeting when a con-

tract with Easom Outreach was presented. For several years, Easom Outreach has been working toward creating a community center at the South Corinth campus.

Mission Mississippi makes tour stop in Alcorn County BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The mission isn’t complete. The effort to promote racial unity through Jesus is an ongoing effort. Mission Mississippi made its stop in the county on Sunday as part of its “Mississippi Glowing for Christ” trek across the state. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the organization is making its way to all 82 counties in the state. On Sunday, local individuals came together as a show of unity for the cause. “It was a great event,” local Mission Mississippi chapter facilitator Bobby Capps. “In a big picture, what Mission Mississippi is doing is saying what happened on Calvary makes us all equal through Jesus … it doesn’t matter whether we are black, white or yellow, we are all part of the same family in Christ.”
