Two escapees among those indicted BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Two men who escaped from the regional correctional facility in June are among those indicted during the latest session of the Alcorn County grand jury. A joint indictment for Sirdon

Capanion Greer and Garnett Denzell Hughes includes two counts — one for jail escape and one for grand larceny. In addition to the escape, they are accused of taking jail keys and a two-way radio. Hughes, who was being

housed on charges of burglary of a dwelling, sexual battery, armed robbery and kidnapping, overpowered a guard at the correctional facility while being returned from exercise time and then unlocked the cell of Greer, who was jailed as a double mur-

der and arson suspect. Other indictments that have been served, according to court records: ■ Joshua Balentine — Taking motor vehicle ■ Sierra Canales — Directing minor to commit felony

■ Timothy Gilley — Possession of controlled substance ■ Dana Gray — One indictment for grand larceny and and another for credit card fraud ■ Michael Gunn — Possession

United Way kicks off year BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Area civic club members got a preview of the local agencies United Way has chosen to support for 2014 during a special kickoff meeting this past week. More than 150 Kiwanis, Rotary and Civitain members

packed The Chop House at Shiloh Ridge banquet room to hear from United Way of Corinth and Alcorn County President Ellis Rhett. “After 75 years in Corinth, United Way continues to be a strong community minded organization,” said Rhett. “We

first started helping people in the Crossroads way back in 1940, and I’m happy to report in just the last three years we have handed out more than $3 million in Corinth and Alcorn County.” Please see KICKOFF | 2A

As trick-or-treaters prepare for a haunting Halloween, the Corinth Alcorn Animal Shelter is giving a voice to the area’s furry inhabitants. Making it an October to remember, the local shelter is busy making plans for their first ever Bark-O-Toberfest. The inaugural festival, sponsored by Smith. restaurant, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the historic downtown Corinth Depot. “We are so excited and happy to help raise money for the Corinth-Alcorn Shelter,” said Julia Smith, co-owner of Smith. Beer and brats will be served up as guests enjoy the sounds

of traditional polka music. A joint venture with Sunshine Horse Rescue of Iuka, the purpose of the event is to raise money and awareness for horse rescue and for the abandoned and unwanted animals in the Crossroads area. “Our goal is to make this an annual event and to make it bigger and better each year,” said Volunteer Director Charlotte Doehner. Featuring tables decorated by local designers, the depot will be transformed into a German fun-fair like Oktoberfest, but with more of a bite. Scheduled activities include arts and crafts and a horse show. Tickets are $15 for the fund-

Strength Team teaches about correct choices BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

GLEN — Choices come in either the good or bad variety. Strength Team members Joel Caldwell and Zeb Bishop pumped up Glendale Elementary School students to always go with the right choice. “Good choices are important,” said Caldwell. “Whatever goals and dreams you have, say yes to good choices and no to the bad ones.” The pair of powerful men impressed the students with a show of strength prior to passing on valuable lessons.

Caldwell ripped two large telephone books in half while Bishop bent a steel rod three different ways. “To make it in life, you need to study and have good habits,” said Bishop. Bishop told students dream makers and dream takers are two groups of people they will encounter during their life. “Dream makers are those type of people who are there to encourage while dream takers tell others they aren’t smart enough and try to make Please see TEAM | 2A
