Corinth proceeds with bond issue $1.6 million will go toward infrastructure work with focus on streets BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday to move forward with a general obligation bond issue for infrastructure work with streets as the main focus. The board passed a resolu-

tion of engagement and a resolution of intent for the $1.6 million general obligation bond, which city leaders say will not affect taxes. The scope of proposed work includes the following: ■ Aldermen will have $100,000 to spend on street

■ Improvements totaling $200,000 are planned for the developing Wick Street area where the old warehouse buildings are being renovated. Plans include milling and overlay, curb and gutter, and parking. ■ Meigg Street will see improved sidewalks and “upscale”

paving in their respective wards, and the mayor and alderman at large will each have another $100,000 to spend on paving. ■ Another $400,000 is targeted for paving on major thoroughfares. The city will consider using a road recycling method on these projects.

street lighting to improve the corridor from Crossroads Regional Park to Corinth National Cemetery. The cost is projected at $120,000. ■ A couple of drainage projects will also likely be included. Please see BOND | 2

Alcorn County’s Pink Heels Tour is set to for October at the Crossroads Arena with high hopes to raise money for the breast cancer awareness fund. On Oct. 17 the Pink Heels Tour 2013 will have some pink fire trucks on hand for all those who attend and admission is free. “We are excited about this big event and we want to invite everyone to come on out and enjoy the event,” said Captain Jonathan Rider, Event Coordinator and PIO / Training Officer for the Biggersville Fire Department. “We will be doing a photo op with local cancer survivors in front of the pink fire trucks at 6:30 p.m. on the day of the event with a massive balloon release. The morning of the event, we will be traveling to our sponsor locations and meeting with local cancer patients at the West Clinic and Magnolia Regional Health

Center.” Captain Rider said they are still seeking sponsors for money, silent auction donations and/or volunteers. The next volunteer planning meeting will be Tuesday, September 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the Biggersville Fire & Rescue North Station (911 Hwy. 45). “We are also seeking local vendors that want to come and sell items. We are asking that a percentage of what they sell be given back to the event,” Captain Rider added. “There will be no entry fee for vendors.” Inflatables will be available for the kids and a video game truck. Armbands can be purchased for the kids activities at the event. There will also be Tshirts for sale and other products for sale on the day of the event, and all the proceeds will benefit the Pink Heals Tour 2013. Everyone attending the event is encouraged to wear pink.

KOSSUTH — Kossuth High School is in the market for a new principal. Principal Matt Smith turned in a letter of resignation to the Alcorn School District Board during its Sept. 10 meeting. Smith, whose last official day on the job is Oct. 31, is taking a teaching position at West Tallahatchie High School. The former Biggersville High School coach and assistant principal will teach Health and Physical Education at the school. “My heart is leading me this way,” said the 1988 Booneville High School graduate. “Being in administration for 12 years, I felt like I was getting further away from the students.” Smith’s move will also get him closer to his brother, Ellis “Bucky” Smith, who is superintendent of the East Tallahatchie School District. “I think this is a good thing for me because I get a chance to get closer to my brother,” he said. “As a principal, I have also missed some things with my kids and I want to spend more time with them … I want to be more of a husband and a father.” Smith replaced Robert Keenum, who resigned in Feb. of

Magnolia Regional Health Center will be hosting the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Heath Problems tenth version of medical coding. Known as the ICD-10 coding, this tenth revision of the ICD, a medical classification list by the World of Health Organization (WHO), will be offered for the Tri-State Healthcare Group’s physicians offices and Nurse Practitioners. “This is going to be a big event,” said Sara Beth Green, the Government and Provider Relations Liaison for the MRHC. “This will be a deal that is nationally directed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and it will affect all medical providers.”

Green said this is far reaching, as it is a national mandate. “As partners in the TriState Physicians Organization (TSPO) and the the Tri-State Provider Network (TSPN), we are moving along proactively to assist all of our members throughout the counties represented by these groups to more easily transition from ICD9 to ICD10,” she said. This particular code has significant importance and is designed for codes for diseases, signs and symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances, and external causes of injury or diseases. According to the new revision, this code set will allow for more than 14,400 different codes and will give permission to track down many

new diagnoses. The codes can be expanded to over 16,000 codes by using optional subclassifications. These detail reports by the ICD can be further increased, with a simplified multi-axial approach, by using codes meant to be reported in a separate data field. “The TSPO and the TSPN will host this event as a free service to help prepare our medical offices with this large transformation,” explained Green. Green said the event is by invitation only and almost every seat has been filled. This program is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. today at the MRHC Conference Room and is set to conclude at 8 p.m. (For more information contact Angela Russell at 662665-8059 or arussell@mrhc. org.)
