Battle of the Hills — J.C. wins BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
J.C. Hill hopes the dark cloud of the contested ward 4 election four years ago can be erased. Opponent Steve Hill, the former ward 4 alderman who challenged the results four years ago, spoke with him before leaving Corinth City Hall shortly after the machine totals were announced in Tuesday’s Demo-
Dance, Hopkins move on to general election cratic primary election. J.C. Hill won the race in a vote of 326 to 266, sending him to a second term on the Board of Aldermen. “I intend to reach out to him to work together in the community,” said J.C. Hill, the former assistant director of parks and
recreation. “He made that commitment to me before he left, because we realize we can get so much more done if we work together. Since we both have been aldermen, I think we both can make a contribution to the community in a positive way.”
Steve Hill had a slight lead of 121 to 109 in the absentee ballot total. J.C. Hill will be unopposed on the Oct. 14 general election ballot. A hefty pile of absentee ballots became the focus of a few
hours’ work late into Tuesday night as candidates and observers awaited the results of a couple of tight races. With absentee ballots totaling 385, the count wrapped up about 10:30 p.m., and those ballots ultimately did not change any outcomes. As residents of the Gift community prepare for the Big Chicken’s homecoming, confusion has reigned over what to do and where to park. An itinerary has been provided for the “Big Chicken” Homecoming, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20. Interest in the “Big Chicken” story continues to grow after the Associated Press distributed the Daily Corinthian story about how the community and total strangers rallied together to bring the infamous rooster to his new home. When Sandy Childs begged the question,”How much do ya’ll want for that Big Chicken?”, she never dreamed it would result in the purchase and rejuvenation of an eightfoot, eight-inch, 300-pound rooster from Mid-South Ornamental Concrete. What started out as a tonguein-cheek Facebook joke among friends led to an undertaking that would stir up laughter and light-hearted musings across the nation. With only a few days left until the “Big Chicken” goes home to roost, Childs wished to make the public aware of the details surrounding its highly anticipated debut, which includes appearances by State Representative Nick Bain of Corinth and President of the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors Lowell Hinton.
