Rural house fire ruled accidental

Day at the fair

BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

A Wednesday evening house fire in rural Alcorn County has been ruled accidental by officials. Authorities responded to the total-loss fire at the woodframed structure at 956 Highway 356 near Jacinto around 6:15 p.m. Alcorn County Deputy Fire Coordinator Jackie Farr said the fire was fully involved when he arrived on the scene. No one was inside the home at the time of the blaze. “It was an old home — 75 to 80 years old, I believe,”

C&M Southern Midways’ Thomas Winters has been on the road with carnivals since the early 1980s.

Carnival workers share their stories BY BOBBY J. SMITH bsmith@dailycorinthian.com

It’s midday, still hot for September, and the crew of C&M Southern Midways is setting up the carnival for the Alcorn County Fair. Morgan Scott is making some adjustments to a carousel ride with pink and blue miniature motorcycles for cars under a striped canopy. Beneath the shade of a midway game shanty, Thomas Winters and George Mort are taking a break. “You wouldn’t believe the miles of cables we have to hook up,” says Winters, a stoutly built man on the backside of middle age with unruly auburn hair and two arms full of blue tattoos.

Carnival times Friday 5 p.m.-until ... Saturday 2 p.m.-until ... $15 arm bands “It’s not the hooking them up that is so hard, but running them around this place. That’s what takes so much time,” says his companion, George Mort. Taller and skinnier than Winters with ropy arms and startlingly blue eyes, Mort has a face that also shows the signs of many hours spent working in the sun. His buzzed haircut reveals a scalp nicked with scars. Winters nods in agreement, lighting another Pall Mall from the pack between them.

“We do every bit of the electrical work on this show, and I do the painting,” he says. His rubber-soled work shoes bear witness to his days of painting. They have become an indeterminate muddle of every color of the rainbow. He points to a ride across the carnival lot, a green miniature rollercoaster made to look like a dragon. “I just finished that one,” he says with obvious pride. “Took three months altogether. Had to take it all apart. But it looks good now.” The droopy-eyed dragon smiles sheepishly. The colors are vivid and shining in the sun. Please see FAIR | 2A

All area veterans and their families are invited out for a hot breakfast on Saturday courtesy of the American Legion. Corinth’s American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary Post 6 will host a free breakfast for veterans and their families at the Post 6 building on Tate Street. The free breakfast is in honor of National POW/MIA Day, which is Friday. “We wanted to do something for the area’s veterans in recognition of the day,” said Commander Tommy Watson. From 7 to 10 a.m. the breakfast will offer eggs, biscuits, toast, grits, sausage, ham, pancakes for the kids — and a

said Farr. “When I arrived the renter was outside trying to keep flames from reaching his truck.” Farr said the renter had no idea how the fire started. “We think it started in a back bedroom of the home — an area the renter said he never went,” said Farr. He said because the homeowner and the renter did not have insurance, an investigation will not be conducted. Volunteer fire departments responding to the fire included Jacinto, Glen and Rienzi. Biggersville Fire & Recuse also sent a rehab unit to the scene.

dish known as S.O.S. “If you’re not in the armed forces you probably won’t know about S.O.S.,” said Watson. “It’s a staple in all military chow halls. The proper name for it is creamed chipped beef.” In another way to mark the National POW/MIA Day, Corinth Mayor Tommy Irwin will sign a proclamation naming Sept. 16 as American Legion Day. Established by an Act of Congress in 1998, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday in September. It is a day to honor those who were prisoners of war and those who

Kelley Hopper is the teacher of government and economics at Kossuth High School and serves as the volleyball coach and assistant fast-pitch softball coach. “It’s a new experience, but it’s been a good one,” she says of teaching government and economics. This year marks Hopper’s 16th year of teaching, including two years at South Tippah and 13 years at North Tippah High School. “I had the opportunity to come teach at Kossuth High School,” said Hopper. “I’d heard a lot of great things about the school and it was a good opportunity to expand and improve. It’s been a great experience. The faculty and staff have been amazing. It was a good decision.” She is married to Michael, owner of Hopper’s Battery Sales in Walnut. They have four children — Angie, Wyatt, Owen and Emmett.
