Students recount DSU shooting BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

On the eve of Delta State University’s 90th birthday celebration, shots rang out sending students and faculty members running for cover on the Cleveland campus. Well-liked history professor Ethan Schmidt was killed

in his office around 10:30 a.m. on Monday by a lone gunman, who police say was fellow Delta State Geography teacher, Shannon Lamb. Taking a nap inside his car near the campus’s main entrance was Corinth native Ryan Jobe. “I woke up to the sound of si-

rens,” said Jobe. “I saw a bunch of blue lights and people running everywhere. My phone had like a million calls and messages.” Jobe said he was beyond shocked when he saw the school alert text about an active shooter on campus. “I immediately started try-

ing to figure out where my girlfriend, Brianna Corley, was,” he said. When Jobe reached Corley on the phone, she was on lock down with her classmates. “I was freaking out. I just wanted to get to her, but no one was allowed in or out,” added Jobe.

Soon the Alcorn Central High School graduate found himself waiting out the chaos from within a locked down school building. Police swarmed the campus, sweeping buildings to search for the shooter while helicopPlease see SHOOTING | 2

With the tax levy for county schools holding at 49.76 mills, the total county tax rate rises to 111 mills. With projected revenues of $17.3 million, the budget increases the solid waste

line item from 4 to the maximum allowed 6 mills, creates a 1 mill tax for the 911 shortfall, and adds 0.28 mill for 911 operations. General county millage increases from 27.53 to 29.71. Examples calculated by Tax Collector Larry Ross show the increase on a $100,000 home with homestead exemption for residents under age 65 will be $52.40 for the year and for residents 65 and older or on disPlease see BUDGET | 2
