Jacinto Foundation Executive Director Beth Whitehurst speaks with a packed room of concerned residents of the Jacinto area in a meeting at the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors’ office Thursday night.
Jacinto concerns spark heated public discussion tect Robert Gray, who serves on the Corinth Preservation Commission: “During the last two weeks in August 2015, I made a thorough examination of the Jacinto Courthouse building and all the documents from other professionals who have been contracted to look at the building over the last 40 years. I have reached a definite conclusion that the building is structurally sound, but one of the 30 windows has a failed original wood

The Jacinto Foundation director faced angry residents Thursday night as she took the floor before a meeting of concerned citizens. While she acknowledges there is work to be done, Executive Director Beth Whitehurst sought to put to rest the repeated claims by some that the 1854 courthouse is “about to fall down.” She read a statement written by Corinth archi-
lintel beam. In my capacity as a registered architect with two professional degrees, I am also legally qualified under state law to provide structural design and evaluation of public buildings.” In addition to concerns about deterioration of the courthouse itself, the long discussion with more than 30 residents touched on most of the same issues that have surfaced in the last few Please see JACINTO | 2
Corinne Pierce had a big heart. The number of lives she touched are too numerous to count. “She had a heart bigger than anyone I know,” said former Corinth High School tennis coach and longtime friend Lynn Wood. “Miss Pierce was compassionate and was always thinking how she could help someone else.” Pierce, who passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2015, is being remembered by those in the community. “I think everyone is aware of the gen- Pierce erosity and love Benjamin and Corinne Pierce had for Corinth,” said Sandy Williams, Chairman of the Corinth-Alcorn Reaching for Excellence (CARE) Board. “That was prominently exhibited through their support of the tennis program, Lighthouse Foundation, the arts and ultimately the establishment of the Pierce Family Foundation.” Pierce, a member of First

Presbyterian Church, established the Pierce Foundation in memory of her husband, Benjamin, to commemorate his commitment to community and to honor his civic leadership. The total investment of the Pierce Foundation in Alcorn County has exceeded $3.4 million in grants and scholarships. “One extraordinary gesture I was associated with was the $100,000 matching grant provided to Corinth’s Community Foundation,” said Williams. “A handful of us were trying to get it off the ground and we were able to meet the match … it meant the world.” Local agencies such as The Alliance; Boys & Girls Club; CARE; Corinth Area Arts Council; Corinth Symphony Orchestra; Corinth Theatre Arts; Crossroads Museum; Crosswind Ministry; LINK; Lighthouse Foundation; Living Free Ministries; Northeast Mississippi Business Incubation System; Sharing Hearts and the UnitPlease see PIERCE | 2

FARMINGTON — Dale Fortenberry is appreciating life these days more than ever. The 70-year-old Farmington mayor had a stoke while sleeping on August 7. When he woke up, he had no use of the right side of his body. “It’s the worst feeling in the world,” Fortenberry said. “I couldn’t move my right arm or leg.” After one blood clot, daily visits to physical therapy and almost two weeks in a Tupelo hospital, he returned home and immediately started feeling better. “As soon as I got home and got to pet my dog and hug my wife, Shirley, I started feeling much better,” Fortenberry said. “I never realized how much I enjoyed just sitting on my back porch until I thought I might not be able to again.”
