City officials finalize 2014 budget BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Corinth’s budget plans for fiscal 2014 became official Tuesday morning as the Board of Aldermen adopted a budget with pay raises and infrastructure work as proposed. The $10.1 million budget
for the new fiscal year beginning Oct. 1 holds the millage rate steady at 95, including the school millage, and provides a pay increase to city employees of 3 percent to those making more than $10 an hour or 30 cents an hour for those making less than $10 an hour.
MHP adds social media to repertoire
City Clerk Vickie Roach said the budget anticipates another in a long line of flat years for sales tax, which is the largest source of revenue for city operations. A mill will generate between $85,000 and $90,000 in the coming year with little change from fiscal 2013.
Citizens can anticipate some street work among infrastructure improvements planned with a $1.6 million bond issue the city will pursue in FY 2014. Plans are to designate $100,000 per ward for street work with the mayor designating another $100,000 for cer-

The Mississippi Highway Patrol has added to its many tools in helping the public. MHP has incorporated social media in getting out information regarding public safety concerns and alerts. “Our overall goal is to make sure we are using all the resources available to inform the citizens of Mississippi of accurate and up-to-date information,” said MHP Director Colonel Donnell Berry. “With the development of so-called smart phones and other communication technology, we see the advancements as a way to better inform the citizens of our state.” Accounts in various social media have been set up by MHP’s Public Affairs Officers. Through the social media accounts of Facebook and Twitter, public affairs officers now have the capability to quickly notify the motoring public of crashes that may disrupt their travel. Troopers will also be able to swiftly advise their communities of Amber and Silver alerts, manhunts and other situations that may be hazardous. PAOs and the Department of Public Safety can be followed on Twitter at: Trooper Eric Henry – @MHPTroopC (Jackson Division); Trooper Tony Dunn – @MHPTroopD (Greenwood Division); Trooper Joey Miller – @MHPTroopE (Batesville Division); and Trooper Ray Hall – @MHPTroopF (New Albany Division).

Cash Express honors civil servants BY JOSEPH MILLER jmiller@dailycorinthian.com
Corinth’s local Cash Express held a 9-11 Appreciation Day for all the Crossroad area fire departments, police departments and all the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) departments on Wednesday. In honor of all those who serve today, and for those who served and died on Sept. 11, 2001, Cash Express wanted to show their appreciation and did so by presenting a cake and a thank you card to all our counties civil servants. Cash Express’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Gary
McNabb, said that this was the first time that they have done this in Corinth and that they were glad that they did. “Well, we just opened the store in Corinth sometime last year, so this is our first time to hold the appreciation day here,” McNabb explained. “Cash Express has done this type of recognition over the last 10 years in every market we have been in and it’s just about recognizing all those who serve the community.” Alcorn County’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Michael Gilmore has the beard for the part. The 51-year-old mechanic with Gilmore Automotive has often been mistaken for one of the Robertson men of the “Duck Dynasty” reality show on A&E. “Everywhere I go, I have kids come up and think I am Si (Robertson),” said Gilmore. Gilmore’s likeness of the bearded Robertsons, along with the prompting of numerous friends, caused the avid 4-H supporter to enter the Modern Woodmen of America Best Beard Contest on Sept. 21. The contest, part of the 3rd Alcorn
Alcorn County Fair committee member Sandy Mitchell measures the beard length of Michael Gilmore. Gilmore plans on entering the beard contest at the fair on Sept. 21 at the Crossroads Arena.
