The final day of qualifications ended with two new hats in the race for the vacant Alcorn School District Board of Education seats. Qualifying early Friday morning in the district three race was Daniel Cooper, 35, of 585 Highway 455 in Corinth. He joins Keith R. Stevens and Lamar Walker, who is the current interim district three board member. Also qualifying late Friday afternoon was Ann M. Little, 66, of 35 County Road 309 in Glen. She will join the district two race with challengers from Pherbia Mynatt and Brandon

L. Jones. Current interim district two board member Laura Studdard will not seek election. Two Alcorn Countians will fight for the district one board seat currently held by onetermer Russ Nash who will not seek reelection. Ricky Fields and April Smith Burns are running for the seat. The qualifying deadline was Friday at 5 p.m., and the races will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. Candidates were requited to gather at least 50 signatures of qualified electors from the appropriate district. Absentee balloting will begin in late September.

Those who knew George Souders remember him as a “no nonsense” kind of guy.

The same might be said of his art — mixed-media collages made up of striking images meticulously ordered in grids of squares and rectangles.

The Burger Bash is back. Grills will heat up on Tuesday for the return of the Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Mississippi’s fourth annual Burger Bash. The kickoff fundraiser for the club’s annual Phenomenal Woman Gala is set for Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pavilion No. 2 at Crossroads Regional Park. Born in 1938 in Tishomingo County, Walter Wynn still lives on the same property in the Midway community that he grew up on. He was in the National Guard for more than 23 years and was sent to Oxford to help escort James Meredith to school at Ole Miss, to Biloxi when Hurricane Camille rocked the Mississippi Gulf coast and to Germany for training exercises. Following the National Guard, he returned to Iuka first working at Philip’s Hardware then Robbin’s Jewelry. In 1980, Bill Moore purchased the downtown Iuka jewelry store and Wynn has worked there since. “I’ve never been without a job, but have never applied for one either,” said Wynn. Married to Judy, the couple has one daughter, Tina, and one son, Jeff Schroeder. They also have four grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter.

A $90,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission will help Alcorn County build an access road in the county’s industrial park. The grant is announced by Rep. Jaime Whitten.

A crowded field will vie for the 4th district seat on the Alcorn Board of Education. The field includes Eric Talley, Mary Kathryn Coleman, Mark Talley, James Christopher Jones, Mitch Dawson, Jamie Hanley and James Bryant.
