Probe continues into fatal crash BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com

Alcohol or drugs may have played a role in a head-on crash near Kossuth that killed one and injured three others Friday. Juan DeJuan, 67, of Decatur, Ala. was killed around 1:30 p.m. Friday when a 2001 Saturn driven by Courtney Burcham, 25, of Corinth apparently crossed from the westbound into the eastbound lane of Mississippi Highway 2 near County Road 504, colliding with DeJuan’s 2005 Dodge head on, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop F spokesperson Trooper Ray Hall. Hall said troopers are investigating to determine if alcohol or drugs were part of the cause of the crash. No charges

have been filed. A passenger in DeJuan’s vehicle, 40-year-old Teresa J. Francisco of Kossuth, was airlifted from the scene to the Regional Medical Center (The Med) in Memphis where she was listed in critical condition Saturday afternoon, according to a hospital spokesperson. A teenage passenger in the same vehicle was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries, said Hall. He did not release the name of the teenager. Hall reported Burcham was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center with moderate injuries. A hospital spokesperson said Saturday afternoon they did not have anyone by her name listed in their records.

The Rev. Jody Hill pays tribute to a former teammate with his book “38: The Chucky Mullins Effect.”

BY STEVE BEAVERS Rev. Jody Hill remembers. His mission is to tell others of a courageous spirit he witnessed from a former teammate. The life of Roy Lee “Chucky” Mullins changed on a late October day almost 25 years ago in Oxford. How the Rebels defensive back lived following a devastating injury impacted the lives of countless others. Hill’s book, “38: The Chucky Mullins Effect,” pays tribute to the Rebels player, who was paralyzed following the tackle on

Vanderbilt’s Brad Gaines. “Several years, I lived with the calling to get the message out about Chucky,” said Hill, who became friends with Mullins while both were freshmen in the fall of 1988. “I had a yearning to learn what made him tick … why was he able to respond with such class and integrity in every situation he faced?” According to Hill, Mullins was known for his beaming smile and courageous attitude. “He took on every challenge with a never-quit attitude,” said

Former United States Navy EM3c Ben Sunderland got a chance to tour a LST on Friday. Sunderland, who served on a pair of LSTs during his time in the Navy, boarded the USS LST 325 while it was in Decatur, Ala.

PICKWICK, Tenn. — All of a sudden 90-year-old Ben Sunderland had plenty to say. As the USS LST 325 rolled over the waters of the Tennessee River, memories of the early 1940s came flowing back for the former United States Navy EM3c. The Corinth man, who relocated to the area in 1981, served on a pair of Land Shipping Tanks (LST) during World War II. “I was lucky to never get a scratch in my over three years in the Navy,” said Sunderland. “I wouldn’t want to do it again, but I wouldn’t trade it Please see SHIP | 2A

On this day in history 150 years ago Sherman orders the citizens of Atlanta to evacuate the city. He tells the mayor, “War is cruelty and you cannot refine it. When peace does come, you may call on me for anything. Then I will share with you the last cracker.”
