United Way kicks off charitable campaign BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

United Way took the field for a new season by bringing together its star-studded squad. “This is a great time of year when people gather in crowds and are excited,” said United Way of Corinth and Alcorn County President Ellis Rhett. “People love football, but we have a different kind of kickoff today … one to help develop our community.”

A new campaign for the local charitable organization got under way with a luncheon Thursday at the Chop House at Shiloh Ridge. “We have a great team and a lot of great players this year,” said Rhett. “Due to people like the ones here today, we have been able to achieve our goal.” United Way supports 18 local agencies. One of those being FFA. 2013 Kossuth High School

Local schools are going duck hunting. Not Teal or Mallard, but the Duck Dynasty variety. Schools have been given the opportunity to sell tickets for the appearance of A&E Duck Dynasty stars Willie Robertson and his son, John Luke, on Sept. 21 at the Crossroads Arena. The two are scheduled to be part of the “Kids and Family Day” being co-hosted by the Arena and Alcorn County Fair. For every $23 ticket sold by the school they will receive $2. “It’s a good fundraiser for them,” said Arena General Manager Tammy Genovese. “Each school could pick a club they wanted to sell the tickets and for every ticket sold, the club would part of the money.” “We are definitely thrilled to be part of this,” added Alcorn School District Superintendent Gina Smith. “I think this is going to be a major event in the community and all of our schools were elated to find out they were going to

Annual Iuka Heritage Day draws big crowd BY JOSEPH MILLER jmiller@dailycorinthian.com

Iuka celebrated 28 years of success of their towns heritage festival this past weekend at the 2013 Iuka Heritage Festival. Iuka’s Heritage Festival began as a one day event, however, since their inception, the Festival has evolved into a weekend event celebrated over the Labor Day Weekend. This event is the highlight of Iuka’s “end of summer” celebrations and it always seems to bring a good crowd. “We had such a great crowd come out and join the festivities again this year,” said Lee Ann Robertson, a Public Relations representative for the event. “The official numbers aren’t in at this time but we do know that the numbers for the battle reenactment were down because of the heat. However, the festival numbers were up after our initial assessment -- even though it

“Vendors were great and plentiful this year. All of them that came out to the festival were impressed with the crowd that showed up, even though everyone had to fight with the heat.” Lee Ann Robertson Public Relations representative was some of the hottest days on record for our area during the event.
