County proposes shelter contract Coach BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors is proposing a contract with the CorinthAlcorn Animal Shelter that would require the acceptance of any animals brought by Alcorn County residents. Along with the contract would come an increase in
funding from $25,000 in fiscal 2014 to $30,000 in fiscal 2015, with the additional $5,000 payable within the first 60 days of the contract to offset the expense of that obligation. Board Attorney Bill Davis has prepared a proposed contract which the board on Tuesday voted to send to the shelter manager
and board of directors for consideration. It would be for the one-year period beginning Oct. 1. The shelter’s budget request to the county for the upcoming year was for $50,000. “There is an increase in funding over last year to help compensate for the require-
ment that animals be taken,” said Davis. Concerns have been expressed by members of the board about the apparent failure to take animals. The proposed contract states the shelter “will accept, and will not turn away

WHEELER — Wheeler High School boys basketball coach Wesley McKay was remembered this week as a dedicated mentor and friend. McKay died Friday after he was hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross a highway on foot in Hampton, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. The collision remains under inves- McKay tigation. The coach was preparing to begin his first season at the helm of the Wheeler high school boys’ basketball program after previously serving as the school’s junior high basketball coach and high school track and golf coach. “Everybody loved him. I felt like we had found the perfect man for this job,” said Prentiss County School Board President Ronny Kesler. Wheeler Principal Todd Swinney grew up with McKay and his brother, Baldwyn School district superintendent and longtime high school basketball coach Jason McKay. Swinney said he was thrilled to have him at Wheeler and excited about the prospects for the future. “I couldn’t wait to see what he was going to do. The kids loved him. He was such a big kid himself,” said Swinney.

Ending the Shame, a local awareness group, is once again partnering with Grandma’s Iron Skillet Kitchen in an effort to raise funds for young survivors of child sexual abuse. During their last event, the group raised money for Cleo, a nine-year-old sexual abuse survivor. “We wish to express our appreciation to Grandma’s Iron Skillet Kitchen, The Protectors (a local biker group) and several online fund-raisers for their support. Because of their efforts, we were able to successfully raise the legal fees necessary for Cleo’s adoption,” said Founder Aleah Ozbirn. “The adoption was granted and the child is thriving with her new mom.” Ending the Shame members and supporters will hold their 1st Annual Christmas for Survivors fund-raiser from 5
to 8 p.m. on Sept. 9 at Grandma’s Iron Skillet Kitchen on Cass Street. The event’s focus is to ensure that young survivors and their siblings from three families end their traumatic year with smiles. “I organized the fund-raiser to reach out to the community and provide Corinthians with information concerning Ending the Shame and our role in the community,” said Ozbirn. “We are pleased to announce that Miss Mississippi TaNechi Temple has asked to join us in our fundraising effort. She is a huge supporter of ending abuse of any kind and wished to show her support.” Temple will help raise awareness for abuse survivors by sharing her “Stitch Kit.” “So many times we don’t realize that children in our communities have been affected by abuse.
