Clinic seeks city, county funding BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Living Healthy Free Medical Clinic is asking the local governments for financial support as it dispenses health care and medications to people who cannot afford it.

“With over 200 recurring patients now we’ve grown to, we can no longer just out of our pockets, as volunteers, support the clinic at the level it needs for the community,” said clinic board member Ronnie Sleeper. He told the Corinth Board of

Mayor and Aldermen on Tuesday that the organization seeks $10,000 each from the city board and the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors, as well as $10,000 each from the Magnolia Foundation and the Pierce Foundation.

“To put it in perspective, a month’s supply of insulin costs anywhere from $300 to $600,” said Dr. Thomas Sweat, who founded the clinic last year. “We can’t get that generic.” He spoke of one patient who has rheumatoid arthritis but

cannot pay the $4 a day, or $120 monthly, it would cost for an older generic drug. These are the people that he sees falling through the cracks of the system. Please see BOARD | 3A

Corinth’s sales tax result was nearly flat for the latest month while the tourism tax posted another high mark. Sales tax funds returned to the city at mid-August totaled $526,283.53, rising about $3,000, or half a percentage point, from a year earlier. Following a 1 percent drop in the prior month, the mid-August deposit gives the fiscal year a total of $5.68 million, an increase of 6.5 percent compared to the same point in the prior year. The mid-September deposit will be the last to go on the books in FY 2015. Funds returned to cities in August reflect sales activity that happened in the month of June. Across the state, diversions totaled $35.7 million, rising 4 percent from a year ago. Eight of 11 northeast Mississippi municipalities posted

gains. Corinth had gross sales for the month totaling $70.6 million. The 2 percent tourism tax on restaurants and lodging yielded $111,087.90 for the month, the highest total to date. Also reflecting June sales activity, the month’s total is up 7 percent from a year ago. For the fiscal year, the tax has generated $1.155 million, up almost 12 percent from the prior year. Other sales tax results from the region (percentages rounded): ■ Booneville — $145,962.35 (-2%) ■ Burnsville — $14,360.33 (-5%) ■ Farmington — $3,254.55 (-19%) ■ Glen — $2,071.03 (+6%) Please see TOURISM | 3A

It’s no secret Corinth resident Cheryl Meints loves photography. Also known as the “Flower Lady,” Meints and her fellow avid photographer husband Don have been documenting their travels across country through the eye of a camera lens for more than 15 years. “I use my cameras as creative tools for documenting history,” said Cheryl. “Whether it’s cemetery headstones, rose gardens or national parks, my pointand-shoots have been faithful friends assisting me on my life journey.” Since 2006, both Cheryl and Don have entered multiple entries in the Crossroads Museum’s photo contest. “It’s a way to share a part of us with our community as well as support a local organization,” Cheryl said. “As an avid traveler, we’ve visited multiple local history museums across the country.
