BY STEVE BEAVERS An influx of identify theft reports plagued the Corinth area last week. Several people have told law enforcement officials of their debt cards being compromised and used out west. “The department has received

about 10 calls,” said Dell Green, an investigator with the Corinth Police Department. “More than one bank has been involved and we haven’t determined a common denominator in the case.” A majority of the reports have been in Irving, Texas, and Las Vegas. “It could be a number of

things,” said the investigator. “Not everyone is reporting the theft to us … most report the theft to their bank and are reimbursed.” The holiday weekend has slowed local authorities in trying to determine where the crime originated. “Hopefully, after the holiday

we can sit down with all the banks and find out what is going on.” said Green. Those who have had their identify stolen should report it to their bank. “I recommend keeping an eye on their account and reporting any suspicious activity,” said Green.

Walker safety raises concerns BY JEBB JOHNSTON

Second chances change lives Ministry urges businesses to help people rebuild, recover BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Business leaders are being encouraged to take a risk. Not a chance to improve the bottom line, but one which will help people get back on their feet. Those are the kinds of opportunities Crosswind Ministry Executive Director Bobby Capps needs more of to help stabilize families. “People want to know all the time what we need at Crosswind,” said Capps. “I need business people to take a risk and hire my people … they have to eat and feed their families too.” Lamar Outdoor Advertising is one of the local businesses to take a chance. “I am just so proud of the ones who have helped,” said Capps. “We need business partners like them to make things work.” Paul Kennedy and Russell Lane were given a chance by Lamar. “Michael (McFall) and Ben (Albarracin) stepped up and Please see CROSSWIND | 2A

An increase in school-related pedestrian traffic crossing Shiloh Road is causing some safety concerns. The Corinth Police Department has been blocking traffic at about 3:15 on Wednesdays to help students leaving Corinth Middle School get across Shiloh Road in the Douglas Street area as they head to First Presbyterian Church for after-school activities. “The city is looking at different alternatives to try to make it safer,” said Police Chief David Lancaster. “There may be the possibility of a crosswalk, but we have to figure out where the best place for that is. We want to make sure whatever we do is safe.” Lancaster and the street commissioner are studying the situation, and some engineering input may be sought. Sight distance is a factor with a hill nearby on the busy street which has a speed limit of 25 mph in that area. Traffic does back up a bit when the students are crossing, and Lancaster is asking motorists to exercise caution and patience in the area. “Especially on Wednesday afternoons, we would like to ask people to slow down in this area and be aware that children may be crossing the street,” he said.

Catfish & Khakis benefits Boys, Girls Club BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Bellies will rumble and mouths water as guests at the 9th Annual Catfish and Khakis Luncheon flock to downtown Corinth in support of a worthy cause. Serving up scrumptious items and southern fried hospitality, Cooks and volunteers will gather beneath the Hog Wild tent at the corner of Fillmore and Cruise from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Hosted by the Boys and Girls of Northeast Mississippi, all proceeds from the fund-raising event will directly benefit the club and help support its many after school programs.

“This is our major fundraiser for the year. So, we wanted to get the word out early,” said Incoming Board President for 2015 Rick Willis. For only $10, attendees can choose between fried catfish or chicken. Fixings include French fries, slaw, hush puppies, a cookie and a drink. Plates can be pre-ordered now through 5 p.m. on Sept. 30. To go orders should be faxed to 662-286-9903. Delivery is also available for those who purchase 10 or more plates. “Due to the economy and our losing grants, this is the most important fall luncheon we’ve ever had,” said Boys and Girls

Club of Northeast Mississippi Executive Director David Roberts. “This year, we are going to zero in more on our take-out. Not only do we hope to increase the number we sell, but we’d also like to cut down the wait time.” Proud to be a United Way agency, The Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Mississippi has and average daily attendance rate of 65 to 70 per day. The first hour of their after school program is dedicated to homework before breaking out into other parts. A recent report from Atlanta revealed that 65 percent of the Please see BENEFIT | 2A

Atlanta is doomed. In an attempt to stop Sherman’s juggernaut, Confederate Gen. William Hardee’s Corps attacks Oliver Howard’s Army of the Tennessee. The attack fails and Hardee loses 2,000 men. This severs the last railroad into the city.
