Ten years ago this weekend one of the worst natural disasters in American history hit the Mississippi coast line. Hurricane Katrina was a massive Category 3 storm when it made landfall on August 29, 2005. The storm caused severe destruction along the Gulf Coast resulting in thousands of deaths and more than a $100 billion in property damage. Even though Katrina’s storm surge flattened towns along the Mississippi coast, it was New Orleans that took a significant blow when heavy rainfall flooded the city’s levee system. More than 80 percent of the historic city soon found itself under water. Corinth business owner and former New Orleans resident

Working with a plan for no change to city taxes, the Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen began to dig into the next fiscal year’s budget in a Friday meeting. The city’s public hearing on the fiscal 2016 budget and tax levy is set for 5 p.m. on Tuesday during a regular meeting of the board, and the board will adopt the budget during its regular meeting on Sept. 15. Including school taxes, the total millage rate in the city is currently 95. In a later meeting, the board plans to discuss the direction pay for city workers will take this year. Several possible numbers were mentioned for across-the-board pay raises, but there was also discussion of giving a larger bump to the lower end of the pay scale. The board penciled in proposed allocations for the various agencies that have sub-

mitted funding requests, with level funding prevailing for most of them. The preliminary allocations have the Siege and Battle of Corinth Commission repeating for another year at its increased allocation of $35,000 for management of the Verandah-Curlee House. Last year’s increase was to help reestablish public visitation. After an increase to $20,000 last year to help with the Wick Street pocket park, Main Street Corinth is on the list for $17,500. The board has a couple of first-time requests on the table. The Boys & Girls Club submitted a request that Alderman J.C. Hill said is a onetime plea to help get a new outreach program started. City Attorney Wendell Trapp said there is statutory authority for the city to allocate funds to the organization. The board also has a new rePlease see ALDERMEN | 7A

Wamsley finds calling as principal BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

GLEN — Born from education royalty, Elizabeth Wamsley never wanted to be a teacher. She grew up in a house education built. Her father, Mike, was a mainstay in the Alcorn School

District working as a student janitor, teacher, principal, curriculum director and later serving four terms as superintendent of education. Her mother, Janice, was also a teacher and even drove a school bus. “I never, ever wanted to be

a teacher, mostly because I felt I had already lived that life through my parents’ jobs,” said Wamsley. “My mom and dad loved what they did, but I knew I wanted to do something difPlease see WAMSLEY | 2A
